Well I am currently in search of a new bike for the spring of 09. My current bikes are a 1999 Bandit 1200 and a Yamaha Warrior. The warrior is my primary 2-up bike for the wife and I and it is not getting it done in the touring department. My Bandit makes a great one up touring bike but the wife does not like the seating position. So I am in search of a 2-up friendly tourer. The warrior will be sold or traded to make way for a new bike.

My short list is the BMW1200GS a bit pricey, FJR1300 nice bike but road only, Strom 1000

Since I live in Maine I have access to lots of well maintained gravel roads to explore as well as miles of crappy paved roads.(I don't know what they do with all my tax money) I also like to trip to NH and VT to ride the mountains.

So I am looking for a bike that is 2-up friendly for 300-400 mile days, about all the wife likes to cover in a day. Will do rough back roads and well maintained gravel. And also carry a load of gear.

I am 5'10 and around 200lbs the wife is 5'4 and around 140lbs(don't tell her I told you)

I realize your opinions will be biased twords the V but thats why I am here.

Thanks....David

I had a rain day off from work so I swung by a local dealer to check out the DL1000's. He has a used 2007 on the floor that I gave the once over twice. I am going back on Saturday so he can look at my Warrior and I can ride the Vee. If all goes well I will order a new 09 for the spring.

I will post my impressions after I ride it. Since it is a used bike I am going to see if he will let me put on a 100 miles or so to get a good feel for it.

2-up

I've a 2007 DL 1000 and previously hadn't owned a bike for many many years. Bought it new 14 months ago and now have 25,000km. Lots of great trips & day rides, some loaded 2-up and some solo. Both my wife and I are comparable sizes to you and yours. Longest ride solo in 12 hours is 1020km on interstates and longest 2-up loaded is about 525km. The Vstrom seems equally happy exploring back gravel roads or paved highways. It's got plenty of guts and I'm still learning about it's power and acceleration.

We love the bike and where it takes us. Just get one, add a Garmin Zumo and go riding.

Great for Two-up

Riding two-up, loaded with gear, and the bike still handles great, passes with authority and has plenty more to give.

I have been on two long trips with my GF in the mountains, with two 36L sidecases and a 46L topcase, the 650 has more than enough power to feel very sporty, uphill, downhill, whatever. I would imagine the 1000 is even more so.

Also I would add that with a backrest of some kind for the passenger, she can scoot back and you won't even know she's there. PLenty of room. I am about your size, maybe 15-20lbs heavier, and my GF is 5'4" 125. Your passenger will probably really want a backrest, because her seat is flat and a little bit slick.
