17+ 650 Rear Shock Oil Change?

1609 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  dravnx
My bike is a '21 with 17k miles on it. I would like to change the fork oil (maybe add a DDC from Cogent along with Adjustable Fork caps). This is easy to do and I can afford it.

But the rear shock is a mystery to me. Can I change the rear shock fluid on the Gen 3 VStrom 650 rather easily? Meaning, can I do it at home? What are my options besides getting it professionally rebuilt by Sasquatch, DMr, Cogent....

I do not want stiffer springs. I like the bike's overall ride quality for the most part, I don't carry a lot of heavy loads, I'm always solo. Bike does not wallow when ridden aggressively. I would like to improve rough road damping quality.

On a very tight budget. Just upgraded my other bike's suspension so I'm broke.

Suggestions?

Only possible on the rear with some serious engineering on your part.
I had the rear shock on my 2019 650 rebuilt by Sasquatch (with a new custom spring). The improvement was minimal, not nearly as noticeable as the improvement from the Cogent DDC valves in the forks.

I had my rear shock upgraded by Sasquatch. I am 215 nekkid and regularly ride with SWMBO. The upgrade definitely improved the ride and handling.

Makes you more 'aerodynamic' i'm assured .:giggle:

I can't really afford to spend $400 for a rebuilt Sasquatch shock. I'd like to but not at this time. I guess there is no DIY option for the rear shock just to change the fluid.:(
Not only is there no way to change the fluid, there is no way to recharge the nitrogen. One of the mods that Jay performs is the installation of a charge valve.
