I'm looking for some ideas about how to mount a 12v socket inside the front cowling/fairing. I know most of you drilled a hole in the cowling and have the socket sitting up top. I'd prefer to have the socket underneath and out of sight. The Garmin Nuvi charger that I'm going to use has a big long stalk on it and I don't want that sticking up in the air. Plus I just prefer this location.

Right now, I'm looking at fabbing a bracket to attach to one of the round bars near the headlight. However, someone may have come up with a better idea. If so, post some pics please.

The gas tank on the left side has a longer projection toward the front than the right side, leaving a nice flat area on the inside. I have a cigarette lighter socket attached there with 3M dual lock.

Holy technobabble Batman! I'm an Engineer and it took me a while to figure at what that dual lock stuff was. It's fancy velcro!

That's an idea. I'd still have to make a bracket to provide a surface to attach the dual lock to the socket, since its round. I doubt I'd have enough surface area just using the velcro on the socket body.

I got a socket at Wal-Mart that had a large flat bracket on it and a rubber plug to seal the opening when not in use.

I mounted two under the seat and one on the black plastic rim of the faring. All sockets are switched with independant rocker switches. I like the look of the setup but my camera is at the cottage.

I do not mind poking holes in this bike. I am going to keep it until the resale value is eroded by 200,000 kms or more.

As I said before, if I can get 200,000kms out of this, I am going to replace it with another.

If you are of the same ilk, poke, drill, cut to your heart's content.

If you do not ride your bike. Keep it clean and perfect. I might want to buy it in 168,000kms

Our Wally world usually doesn't stock stuff you commonly find in US stores. I think all they really share is the name.

As for poking holes, I don't do it willy-nilly, but if need be I will. I modified the blank on the throttle housing to hold the switch for my heated grips. However in this case I want the outlet inside. That Garmin adapter is huge and I'd prefer not to look at it every time I ride.

I did find a bracket at the front of the bike with a largish hole 1/2" to 3/4" that might be a good spot. I just have check that I can turn the handle bars lock to lock without hitting the outlet. The steering was locked when I checked.

just got back from wally world and they had what seemed to be the same socket with a flat bracket for mounting. 10 or 12 canadian, had to bribe my daugher to go there with promises of Nemo gummi bears so it actually ended up costing closer to $20

No such luck for me. I've never found anything that's supposed to be at Walmart. Maybe it's just the Ottawa stores.

Anyway, I found a great spot to mount the socket that I'd already bought. I just had to fabricate a bracket for it. I bought a piece of 1/8" x 1-1/4 Aluminum from Home Depot. When I went to make the 90 degree bend the aluminum snapped! Dunno what that was about.

I happened to have some 1/8" steel plate lying around. I broke out the plasma cutter and rough cut a basic shape. Here's what I eventually ended up with (painted with spray-on bed liner):



The bend in the bracket was necessary because the clutch cable would bind up on the socket otherwise.





Here is the bracket with the 12V socket installed.



I attached the bracket behind the cable guide for the clutch.



Looking down from above, the location is out of the way, yet still easy to reach.



Here's a side view to help locate the socket. It's basically level with the bottom of the ignition switch housing.



I hooked the socket directly to the battery via an inline fuse. I have 10A fuse in there for now.

I like it. I take it you have a ground wire going to the battery too.

Yes, I do. I didn't want to hook directly to the battery, since I will be removing the battery for the winter. But I didn't see a better choice. The heavy ground wire attaches to the back of the engine - I could have hooked in there but... nah. The positive wire disappeared under the tank somewhere and I didn't feel like chasing it down.

One option (what I did) is to mount the sockets on the inner fairing cowl. They can still be easily accessed from above, and do not come on the way of steering. Additional strong point is the cables don't need to bend with steering minimizing risk of fraying.

Electrical connections are connected directly on the battery terminals. There is ample space for cables behind the inner cowl.

I used sockets with waterproof cover. Even the constant rain in Ireland the past year has not been an issue. Connections are also nicely protected from rain by the fairing both when on the move and when stationary. Also the connections are not visible if you look at the bike from normal view angle.

Now if only the suzuki finish survived Irish climate as well as these:

PS. I think the setup by aircav looks way more professional and neat but this was an easy way to do these sockets.

Thanks for the compliment.

I was looking at doing it the way you did but I didn't see anything I could attach to. Do you have more pics from different angles?

Thanks for the interest. Here is another photo as seen from above. It shows the min clearance between the sockets and forks:

As you can see the sockets are screwed directly on the fairing. Unlike it looks in the picture, there is plenty of space between the screw and electrical connector underneath. The fairing plastic is quite thick and flexible so there have been no fracturing etc. If one wanted to make the assembly more solid it would be possible to attach a plate of e.g. aluminum behind the plastic and bolt the sockets through that as well.

My wiring looks like bit of a mess. Better fix it soon :) Some cable ties would not go amiss. BTW. The connectors on top right corner are not related. They are for heated grips.

Its not just you...I've never found anything at walmart that is supposed to be there either...I think they stock differently in canada
than the ones in the states. Try finding posi-tap connectors there (good luck). Anyway, this project inspired me, but I'm pretty

Other threads on this site and Vstrom related sites suggest that ANY electrical device (including 12V outlets) have the negative wire run directly to the negative terminal on the battery, not to the chassis. Why?....it has to do with dissimilar metal to metal contact (i.e. aluminum alloy to steel, etc) leading to corrosion at the dissimilar metals interface. May be a bunch of bull, but I know for sure that is what I'm doing!

I went to pepboys yesterday and they had a couple diffrent options with a bracket attached that you could connect to anyplace with a bolt. But im going to do the same as Sameh did. Why didn't you go on the inside of the cowl instead of the outside? seems like it would br drier there?

I have mine mounted to the Pat Walsh shelf now, but for about a year I just zip tied it to the fairing mount. Worked wonderful well:
