Considering an upgraded rear shock for my 2020 1050XA
Feedback?

Was hoping Elka ( like their shocks and supporting CDN) had one or would build one but no joy...they are outa bikes focusing on ATVs and sleds.

Tourtech looking like an obvious choice....specifically designed for big adv bikes and their enviroment...exc build quality
Traxxion makes their shocks correct??

Their $1500cdn price tag is my limit.

Ohlins, Penske the only other choices??

Feedback from any of these shocks welcome please...on anything from 2014 up VEE

Should have added...

Primarily looking for a high build quality serviceable shock that can host a spring suitable for my weight (215 outa the shower) and has superb competence for real world shit road riding...plush/controlled and the adjustability to get where I want from an excellent baseline valving. Remote preload of course.

Dont off road thrash my VEE...but somewhat high speed strafing of shitty paved and gravel rds is what I do...occasional camping and overnighters with moderate gear...never a passenger.
Tractive Suspension make Touratech shocks.

I have Tractives X-cite PA shock fitted to my 2017 Vee. A very good quality shock, well made and the preload adjuster has 60 clicks of adjustment which offers more range than many other shocks. The X-cite is a base model shock with rebound and preload adjustment only.

On the downside they're expensive. The valving out of the box for road riding was terrible, l took it to an Aussie suspension tuner who revalved it and changed the rebound and compression shim stack to suit my riding style, mainly touring on crap roads.

The spring they supplied with the shock was the same rate as OEM. Tractive obtains rider sag by putting a high rate of installed preload on the spring, about 15mm's. The ride was harsh but improved with a heavier spring for my weight and less installed preload, about 10 mm's.

The shock now performs much better than the OEM shock but taking the extra expense of a retune/new spring into consideration and the number of times l had to remove and install the shock l won't be buying Tractive again!

Hope this helps.

Im hoping that Touratech should be able to deliver on a stellar baseline shimstack/cartridge setup ...likewise springrate with pretty much zero preload

this is the entire reason to buy an aftermarket shock ...and the reason Im looking for feedback on otherws experience before buying

theres zero reason to not deliver it either ....and Im def not prepared to have to re/re the shock and dissasemble it for revalves to get it right either ....shouldnt have to ....the parameters are very clear ...and my specs for weight/gear/expectations will be up front

I am familiar with RaceTech stuff ....have a good friend locally who is a RT certified shop

problem with RT stuff is their components are quality ....unless your suspension tech has a setup and or you have a known proven setup .....RTs specs are typically harsh and or off in my experience having had many off road and race bikes setup with RT stuff

willing to pay for a company that has a proven setup they have taken the time to develop....and works outa the box......the clickers and preload provide an envelope of adjustment to an already competent spec.....

Tens of thousand or more VEEs out there being ridden by mature competent riders in real world conditions ....the formula for a competent rear shock must be dialed in by one or more companies ??

same for the forks for that matter

Im thinking TouraTech, Penske or Ohlins must be there ??
You can try german Wilbers, they make good shocks.

You might want to reach out to "Accelerated technologies" near Buckhorn, Ontario. Journalist David Booth, AKA "Motor Mouth" speaks very highly of them and had his shock(s) on his 2019 DL1000 redone by them. He is very particular and really liked the results.

ps: are you coming to the meet-up Bancroft in April?

..Tom
I actually have dealt with John at AT in the past...bought Elka shocks from him for my sled this past winter.

I was all set to reach out to him for my VEE but Elka says they dont make a shock for the VEE. Im going to reach out to him regardless as he may offer other brand options altho he is a big Elka dealer.

I did absorb the article Dave Booth penned...good stuff....seems like the Traxion AK cartridges worked well for him...he also seemed to be seeking what the average ADV rider ( Stroms in particular) are seeking.

For what it's worth, I reached out to a Cdn dealer for Touratech; Officially they do not offer anything for 2020-22 DL 1050.

I tried reaching out to Maxton; beyond an initial email acknowledgement, no further responses to my querries.

I tried Nitron, and they were very helpful in answering questions timely and completely, even received a phone call!

I am placing my order with Nitron in the next day or so for an R3 Adventure with H/L compression on a reservoir with hydraulic preload adjuster. 4 weeks or so for the build and so should have it for the start of the riding season here in NS.
^^^^^ Thanks for that. I am aware of Nitron...pretty high end shocks...British made correct? Pricey?

Please do post your experience when U get it (y)

Nitron has 3 levels of shocks; R1, R2, R3.
R1 is the most basic, preload adjustment and rebound, R2 adds compression adjustability, R3 has high and low speed compression adjustability.
The price goes up accordingly, and hydraulic preload adjustment is available as well adding to the cost!

I placed my order today for the NTR R3 Adventure shock. Pricey, yes, but I'm intending on keeping the bike till I'm too old to ride, and I'm spoiled after having a high end aftermarket reservoir shock on my Honda.

The OEM shock on the 1050, was lacking in that adjustability that I've come to love and shock-fade was a bit of an issue as well!

The Nitron should solve these issues!:)

Is the 2020 and newer Vstrom 1050 the same shock as the previous Gen1000 bikes ??

Everything that I've read on this forum says "yes", but different part numbers, slightly different spring rate and valving.

I wasn't willing to risk several grand on a shock (Touratec/Tractive), and potentially have an issue and the maker/retailer tell me "sorry/too bad" because I mounted it on a 2020 and not a 2019, so warranty voided.

I saw a post where someone had a Nitron fully adjustable shock with reservoir and hydraulic preload on a 2020 1050XT, so I contacted Nitron and was completely assured, no problems/difficulties whatsoever!

I should have the shock in about 5-6 weeks!😁

Very cool....keenly looking forward to how it works for ya(y)

By same oem shock 2019 vs 2020 I meant fitment ....as in length/stroke/leverage ratios etc....I know Suzi made spring rate/valving changes to both the shock and forks in 2020

If the fitment hasnt changed it should mean there are companies out there with times/miles of testing on a shock
I've got one of these on order, hoping for June delivery. BD40 Shocks

He's not in Canada, but pretty close to the border.

I had an Elka purchased for my 2005 DL650, and moved to my 2006. Loved that shock.

I'm about 220# without gear. The 2020 DL1050xt at full preload has about 1/3 sag when I'm solo with riding gear. So adding my normal touring cases or wife put me riding too low. Lowered isn't horrible when the bike is heavy. But I'd love the option to change the range so that the stock shocks max preload setting is my minimum preload setting. I could probably do that with a spring, but this whole shock option will be a lot easier to install, and I'll still have a complete stock shock if I ever need it.

I'll post some thoughts about it once I get it installed. But unless they calculations are way off I think I'll be easy to please.
Interesting...Ive never had DMR stuff but hear nothing but good about him.

Wonder who is making the shock for him??

Was remote preload adjuster an option?

Yes. Remote preload is what I ordered.
What was the pricing?
Did DMR say who makes the shock for them?

In my recent experience, I had Traxxion convert my 1st Gen DL1000 2-Way Penske shock I had laying around to the 2nd Gen (2014-2019) spec for my 2020 1050 XT (no spec for 1050XT with Penske). All the part numbers matched up linkage-wise on the microfiche so thought it was a safe bet.

The issue I ran into was the top cap made contact with the frame. I did some grinding on the top cap (rec by Traxxion), but unfortunately the material became too thin and I sprung a pinhole leak and lost the oil/pressure (circled in red on 2nd pic).

They are currently working with Penske on a lower-profile top cap for the newest generation and are going to take care of the replacement at no charge. I have another message out on the status and will update when I have more information.
