1050 and Dyno Testing

3411 Views 26 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  TinMan88
Tomorrow we have a "Dyno Day" run by a local bike club at a nearby workshop. I'll be putting the 1050 on it to see what its power and torque figures really are compared to claimed factory specs.

I also have the Akrapovic muffler off the old DL1000A here. I'll be taking that with me. Hopefully it won't be too busy to allow me to do the first run with the OEM muffler, then swap them over and do a second run. I want to see if these slip-ons actually do anything other than be louder (and that with a v twin isn't necessarily a bad thing, eh?).

No I meant like using the dyno and then tuning with a computer/Flash the ECU stuff.
It's possible, problem is the ECU's Suzuki use aren't as amenable to reason as many others so in this case likely no.
Hey guys, did the dyno day. I wasn't able to swap mufflers from the Akra to the OEM to compare outputs. Too many bikes and I ran out of time.

Anyway, some good guesses here.

96.1 hp/72kw (106hp/79kw)
66.44 ft/ib/90nm (74/100 nm)
241 km/h/150mph top speed.

This is the graph associated with my run. Sorry for the crappiness of the quality but it's a screen shot of the video that I shot.

I'd upload the video too but I don't think that I can.

Any "Tunes" to be made?
Dunno. Short of buying and fitting a Power Commander which is compatible with the Akrapovic I don't know.
Not bad! That motor isn't really made to make big HP numbers. Flywheel is a manhole cover.

I think there is a HP limit in place and the trade is in the reliability of the components. We know this lump will make 125 all day long. Built as under-stressed, its performance is measured in years of service.

Indeed and this is one of the reasons why I bought into the Vstrom category - to ride bikes that aren't stressed, comfortable and cater for my ever-changing riding style as I get older.

Prior to this I owned a series of 1000-1100cc sport touring bikes, the last of which was a Blackbird.

The aim of yesterday's dyno run was twofold:
See how it performs with and without the Akrapovic muffler (which I didn't get time to do) and to see what its performance numbers were in relation to factory specs. Plus it was a good social day out catching up with people.

Considering it's based off the TL1000R engine, I'd say 125 or even 135 is easily obtainable. I used to have a 2006 SV1000s that was tuned and with exhaust. It was incredibly powerful for its time and class. But the SV's redlined at like 11k RPM, if I recall correctly.
1997 TLS was the beast of them all.

Huge valves and tuned for superbike racing.

Interesting stuff , I find the 1050 great for my use engine wise , does commute well , tours well and fun to ride with good mpg / tank range
Plenty fast enough for me

Cheers Steve

Not bad. I assume most people know factory Hp figures are typically measured at the crank.
I've done some mods to my old '06 DL 1000 and it will do 99.6 HP and low 70s in torque (before the high compression pistons). I can't speak for the newer models, but the Gen 1s cannot make SV or TL power because of the smaller injector bodies, and likely intake passages and valves. Injectors cannot be easily changed because our original ones are not electronically compatible with the SVs or TLs. One member here (John) did a swap putting an SV engine in a Strom. The biggest job was rewiring the whole bike to be compatible with the SV. The guy that did my engine work builds TL drag bikes, etc. He knows what he is doing and will not attempt to do an engine swap or injector swap on the Strom. At the track, mine is still accelerating at 138mph (corrected), then I have to brake for the first corner. I think it's good for 145+-. I've owned two TLs and love the performance but can't deal with the riding position. I'm 78 years old.

Know what you mean. I tell my KTM1290 friends "it's not fast, but it is fast enough". That really confounds them, b/c 99.9% of the time, where we ride, having 145 hp vs. 106 makes no difference, and might even get you killed by forgetting you are not on a track.

Don’t worry about your KTM friends. They will either blow up or run out of gas as you pass them with a “chit eating grin”.
