Garmin Montana

I got a Garmin Montana for a trip my wife and I took through the Socal deserts last week end. I really like it and would highly recommend it. It is waterproof and does all the highway routing tricks as well as being useable as a handheld. It works well with gloves on and the screen is bright and big enough to easily see what is going on. The routing software worked fine and turn by turn was accurate even in very out of the way back roads.

I mounted it using the Garmin cradle and RAM mounts. Electrical is done using a handlebar Powerlet plug from Whitehorse Gear which is a great idea - very clean when the GPS isn't in place AND if you wanted to restore the bike to stock it could be done in 10 minutes.

We also tried Scala G4 bike to bike communications for the first time. That also worked as advertised and did away with all the hand signals and flashing headlights we had been using. It is really nice to be able to just talk to the person you are riding with. Also highly recommended.

I'll put up some pics this weekend. After the first trip I want to move things around a little. I have the GPS offset a little to the right and lo and behold you need to use your left hand to run it (or let go of the throttle). Dumb me, but I want to fix it.

Used Garmin Base Camp for the trip we did, but thanks, I will give it a try.

Photos, albeit terrible photos.

Anyway #1 is without the GPS and cradle. There is a ramball on the right forward handle bar clamp bolt. (The bike has a 1" lift and 1 1/2" rear extension on the bars). The power plug is mounted on the bar between the clamps and is hot all the time - the fuse is at the battery. This is how the bike lives when not going anywhere in particular.

#2 is the Montana GPS in it's cradle. It looks higher than it really is. Again lousy photographer.

#3 is the Garmin saddle with the GPS removed.

The dial on the left is a thermometer (for air temp). I'm always curious about it.

I'm sold on the GPS - it isn't cheap and it comes with Topo maps. If you want the turn by turn you need to buy the map set (thanks Garmin). You can also download high rez aerial photography for any where you are interested in the detail (again you get to pay Garmin for that). It is waterproof and very portable. The whole installation took an hour (to run the harness).

I did find out my speedo was out by 5-6mph. My wifes on her Wee was out about 5mph. No surprise here - it has been reported here often along with the fix.
