iPhone GPS and Sena Bluetooth

I have a new Sena Bluetooth which I love and I want to get GPS but I see no reason to spend hundreds on a stand alone unit. Does anyone recommend any of the iPhone navigation apps? I would like to multitask by listening to music and have the gps send the turn by turn voice commands. It would keep the phone in my pocket so I am less worried about 3d maps. Not sure if this can even be done but can't find anything on this.

There is an iPhone app that I have called Waze that is perfect. I commute 150 miles round trip and it is perfect. It is free and it includes turn by turn nav with voice commands (through my UCLEAR HBC 100 bluetooth unit). Also since its a "social networking nav app" it lets other users post the positions of traffic cops, accidents, slow traffic, etc. I think it works great.

A paid alternative would be MotionX that works well but I think it costs $20 for the year.

I've been using G-map for a couple of years now. Does exactly what you describe; has its own music menu you can use without leaving the app. Took me a while to get use to the map itself, I much prefer the stock map that comes with the iPhone to be honest.

I also turned off the audio guide and just use the map routing. But you can certainly leave the audio on and leave the phone safely hidden in your pocket while it's giving you directions.

What I like about it is that it has its own map database meaning it does not require data to function. Something I appreciate when travelling to the states. Downside is that it needs 6gb of free space to install on the iPhone but once there it uses up only 3gb.

Anyway, I'm fairly happy with it.

Only problem I can see with that one is the cost. $199 I believe?

I thought I'd reply for the Aussies - metroview is the bet for Australia on a budget. $15 It has most the features of Tom Tom. Speed Zones etc

For people outside Australia, if you can afford it, Tom Tom is always good.

There is "navfree" for various countries which works ok, but not the fastest, nor the best routes, but is free, turn by turn, and offline. So give it a go.

I used Tom Tom iPhone app when in Canada and it was better than navfree because it had speed limits built in. Other than that, for how we used it, it was fine.

Hope that helps someone :)

iphone app

I use both of the motionx gps apps. Whith the GPS app add you can routes and tracks and download maps. With the GPS drive app you can preload the maps along a route so cell service is not required. They are having some issues with memory usage not being inline with maps downloaded. The GPS can also act as a SPOT tracker device as long as you have cell coverage when you want to send info.

I have a Sena bluetooth as well, I love that damn thing! The long distance bluetooth (rider to rider) is amazing! We had 4 riders this past weekend all with Sena units and being able to group chat or individual chat with crystal clear comm was incredibly useful.

I thought I would skip buying a designated moto GPS too and just use my iPhone (Garmin app). The problem with that is and its a huge problem for me. 99% of the places I ride where I need a GPS = no cell reception. So having a GPS on my iPhone is like boobies on a bull, useless.

So I'll be getting the new Garmin moto unit very soon.

GPS options

My Garmin Zumo 550 (I know, it is out of date) gives me directions to my Sena along with my music and my phone (if I want but I rarely pair the phone to the GPS....I don't want to talk on the phone while I ride.) It is handy for the directory feature though. The Zumo series is MC specific and along with being waterproof, have a fuel monitoring feature that pops up a 'gas pump' icon when its time to start looking for fuel. Touch the icon and it gives the location of the nearest fuel. The phone apps for GPS are pretty good but I've found that using phone for GPS sucks the power out of them pretty quick. Ok for short runs but not for all day navigation.
