12V Accessory Plug-in - Where to mount?

Where have people mounted their aftermarket 12V accessory power sources? I've got a 2003 DL1000 and want to add one but I need some suggestions on where to mount the thing! Assume that I'd like to mount it somewhere near the handlebars (not under the seat or anywhere obscure like that). Photos would be great. Thanks.

I thought mine looked perfect right dead center of that sticker with the wordy dissertation about how imminent death will occur if you improperly clean the windshield.

How did you mount the plug? Obviously you drilled it out of the fairing but the process?

Did you remove the fairing piece before drilling or do it with it on. What about cable rerouting? Some have complained about short cables that needed lengthening....any issues? Hows it work? :mrgreen:

Popular place...mine was on the bike when I bought it but not wired up! Sorted now!

Richland Rick's aux dash/shelf thingie:



Pros: Clean install, reversible (no extra holes in the bike), good surface for mounting other toys too
Cons: Requires mucking with control cables, particularly on the brake side, *nearly* makes contact with gauge cluster

The LED in the center of the dash above the key is a Signal Dynamics voltage indicator.

Works fine. No photos of the process but I drilled the panel in place with a hole saw. Wired it using the Eastern Beaver grip heater plug. I soldered the connectors that go to the 12v outlet and added a Passport "smart cord" in the process. The smart cord is wired off the base of the 12v outlet.

Looks like the popular thing to do is make a hole in the black plastic fairing... Can't say I'm too excited about that but the accessory plug is a must-have in my book. I like the additional dash idea but I'm guessing it would cost more than I'm interested in spending.

So do most people use a "marine" accessory plug? I've been looking around and can't seen to find one that looks like it will be good for standing up to any potential weather elements. I'm headed to a motorcycle store here in town tomorrow and hope they will have something that will work.

I bought mine from Eastern Beaver and it included instructions for drilling a hole...IN MY BABY!?!? I don't think so. I screwed mine into the wire bail holding the brake cable that is attached to the front side of the upper section of the triple tree. I had to widen the wire bail just a tiny bit, but it's been there for about six months without a single bit of movement or problems. I have used it for my GPS as well as my phone. I use a RAM mount for either (I only have one mount so I can't do both at the same time) unit and it has performed flawlessly, and no holes in my fairing. :beatnik:

This sounds like a set-up that interests me more-so than drilling in the fairing... I just don't trust myself to make a nice clean hole exactly where I want it (sad, I know). BillZ - Any chance you can get a photo of your set-up? I'll check out Eastern Beaver unit and also take a good hard look at the triple tree this afternoon to see if I can visualize what you've got. Thanks!

This installation is really simple. The Eastern Beaver instructions are very clear and the hard part is routing your wires under the gas tank through the wire harness to the battery. I made my "live" so I can plug up any time. (Do the wires after you do the mount, so you can slip the threaded collar over the wires and up to the base.) Then, stretched the wire bail out just a tiny bit, to slip the point point through the bail without scaring the plastic threads up, after pulling the other cables out of the bail, just to keep them out of the way while I was working. Slip the point point through the bail, run the threaded collar up the base plate and tighten by hand, just enough to compress the rubber washer a little. Then I ran the wiring to the battery. It was fast and easy, except for the wiring part, which I took longer on because I'm weird about that kind of stuff. I wouldn't like to see the wires hanging out and looking crappy.

I did take the gas tank off, which is a pain in the butt all by itself, but it made the job very easy. I think you could do this without taking the tank off, but it'd be much harder to be sure you have your wires safely through any tight spots.

I don't have any pictures on this. I already checked, anticipating your request. I didn't ride today (we're supposed to get rain this afternoon) but I could get you a shot tonight if you would like. Let me know. :beatnik:
