iPad

It appears that I will need to aquire an iPad for work purposes.

At a minimum a 16gig iPad with wifi is required. In real work use of the iPad away from work is there much point in paying the extra for more memory and/or 3g?

Thanks,

Tom

I bought an iPad without 3g thinking "I already have a 3G in my cell phone, I don't need another device with it".
Today I'm very sorry to not bought with 3G.

No. I have 1 16 gig one, all my docs are in dropbox and most apps pretty small unless you play games. If you really need cellular, a better deal is to get a MiFi portable hotspot, and use it with phones to laptop's at 4g speed if needed

You will prolly use it for more things than you suspect. I have the 64gb 3G version and would not be happy with less.

Too many devices, man. I'm trying to get away from that.

I already have a Blackberry that I am very happy with, an iPod Nano that provides me music while riding (as well as 16 gigs on my Zumo) and a Netbook for web sufing and route planning while on long rides. I don't really need an iPad and was not interested in getting one but I know that technology can be very addicting and that I would likely use it for lots else.

So will I feel that I am really missing things if I don't have 3g and if I only have 16 gigs? It is $100 more for 32 gigs over 16 gigs, and $100 more for 3g as well.

If an iPad could talk to my Zumo I would likely want it for eriding as I am sure web browsing and some of the other features would be real nice to have, but the main reason for gettign one is that I am required to have it for work. I odn't need to get it before mid January.. do prices generally drop after Christmas or does Apple's tight control of their market eliminate that?

They do sell refurbs in the apple store online, Tom. They are exactly like new with a new warranty. Any refurbs from apple are blemish free with new accessories.

I use my iPad 16GB with WiFi and have all my docs like a complete set of factory maintenance manuals for all my motorcycles, all work related docs, about 400 cd's of music, many useful apps and I've barely dented the 16GB environment. If WiFi is not available I just wireless tether the iPad to my 4g Android phone with built in Hotspot and I'm still in business.

By dropping my business card into a fishbowl at a conference recently, some nice sponsor sent me a 16gb wifi iPad2. Now I rarely use my netbook or turn on the desktop at home. There's a bunch of music and videos for the kids that my wife put on there, a pile of ebooks, a remote desktop to get at my office, a bunch of other apps she seems to like, and it doesn't seem to make much of a dent in the memory.

I watch MotoGP and WSBK races on it while I'm making the kids' lunches and doing dishes (I'm a modern dad!!!). And sometimes I surf Stromtrooper, like now. If you're not an Apple user, it will take getting used to. Steve Jobs really is the ghost in the machine, and the peculiarities, and inability to do anything but his way can be annoying.

As for 3G, I sometimes wish I had it, but there's wifi just about everywhere, and our IT guy showed me how he can set up his iPhone to be a wifi hotspot. Unfortunately our BBs won't do that, but mine is getting so bashed up I expect he'll replace it with an iPhone shortly (I suspect he's waiting for the 5 to come out).

I wouldn't pay for it, but for free, it's a great entertainment toy.

Video is what eats up memory the fastest. A single well-compressed 720p feature film can easily be 2-4GB.

I have an old iphone 3G with 16GB of memory, and I'm always bumping up against the limit, mainly due to the 11+ GB of music I keep on it. I don't even try to use it for video, because the screen is too small and it's pretty slow by today's standard. But video looks great on the ipad, so I can see storage being an issue if you actually load videos onto it (as opposed to streaming).

Also keep in mind that, as with all storage devices, the actual formatted size is less than the advertised number. The operating system takes up some space too, so a bone-stock "empty" 16GB ipad actually has about 14GB or so available.
