Spot satellite locator

I have been eyeing the spot satellite locator. Can anyone compare or contrast the v.1 vs v. 2. Or just pros and cons of the unit. I have read how the web page is a pita. Any other info would be much appreciated.

Quick read of the site looks like V2 is just smaller than V1. I have V1 and some friends have V2. Same functionality (unless I'm missing something). It's good for others to monitor your ride, and the obvious, get help (emer or otherwise). I rode to the Grand Canyon and there were plenty of places I didn't have cell coverage. Each time I stopped, I pushed OK and my wife got a "I'm okay" message and long/lat on her cell phone.

Other family "watches" rides on the findmespot page as it breadcrumbs every 10 minutes and it will overlay on Google Earth....

A coworker uses it for his Scout troop to keep worried parents informed. It breadcrumbs, hits OK throughout the day and one last time before turning it off as they set up camp.

Worth it IMO.

I too have a SPOT 1. Riding with others that had the V2 I saw about the same performance. I found the breadcrumbs OK for a general indicator of where you where headed and if you are moving. They SPOT I found pretty useless as far as tracking in the mountains. The I am OK function will work and give location however. The EMS function I have no experience.

My suggestion if you add one is get the basic plan and use Jason Jonas's service for tracking and save the $50.00 annual fee on top of the $100.00 basic service fee.

Other options are the many Smartphone tracking apps or if you are really going of the beaten path consider a true Personal Location Device, which are much more trustworthy but costly

EDIT: If you are AMA Member they give you a pretty good discount

v.2 is said to have a better transceiver to reduce dead spots (pun intended), but I have no way to know, since I never owned a v.1.

What is critical, however, is that the second generation has a protected S.O.S. key. False alarms caused by accidental triggers while the unit was in a backpack have caused search and rescue teams to scramble on several occasions. This can ruin your day.

Get the newer one.

Thanks for the info. Happypuppy, I went to the Jason Jonas website. Do they only provide tracking services or do the have the same SOS abilities as the spot home page does?

Send a message via AIM to vegashotwheeler
I have both and like the 2 much better.
Smaller, lighter and easier to use.
The V.1 you would send an OK message and after 15 minutes or so have to remember to put it back into tracking mode.
You hit OK on the V.2 and after the message goes out it automatically goes back to tracking.
V.2 also has a second OK message that can be set up to go to other receivers than the first OK.
V.2 is a much better product in my opinion.

Jonas is an IBR guy and he just tracks. The basic plan ( which you have to have ) gives you the basic function.

I've been using the first version for two years, never had any trouble with it. I keep it in the Givi topbox.

So prior to my first post I was surfing EBAY and I found V1 and V2 at pretty good prices. So my first instinct was go for the cheapest. So I bid, win,o crap it was a V1 for 60.00. Resold it last night for same price. I understand that if you wait till April 1,that Spot is giving a 50.00 rebate on the V2. So I think I will pick mine up then. Info was taken from the AltRider page about the rebate.

bought the spot unit in July, we've used it a few times of course. It's great to track a persons progress or map you trip. I used it again going to Montana, wife was able to see that I was safe, then it stoped working. Apparently I have been sitting just outside of Butte MT for a few days, Tech support said to move to a clear area , replace the batteries, turn unit of/on. LADY !! Montana has big skys.
Got home and called them again, waited over twenty minutes for a tech again, now I have to mail it in for repair or replacement. All that extra insurance I bought wont help either, if I want overnight delivery of a new unit that will cost me. I think Tech support did not help me at all, and since SPOT is not as reliable as it claims, I don't feel good recommending it to friends,
