ear buds or ear phones??

I ride with ear plugs to save what little hearing I have left. So I have the volume cranked up on my phone and sena but it apparently makes the sound garbled and my phone asks "did you say this" or "did you say that" endlessly. Since it does no good to curse AI, I turn the volume down and all works well except I can't hear it. (tested off the bike, wind noise is the basic problem) So, will ear phones or buds fix this? if so what brand?
I don't want to spend much until I see it will help so your input will be decisive. Thanks in advance for your opinions.

The Sena speakers are not that good so when you turn up the volume, the sound gets distorted. I found a relatively inexpensive set of Sony headphones, took them apart and replaced the Sena speakers . That helped a lot with the issue your describing. I have tried all kinds of ear buds and never did find any that did a good job of dealing with the wind noise, yet were comfortable to wear.
I use the Max Leight ear plug (the soft green ones) and find that, combined with my reworked, in helmet speakers, a good enough for me. Audiophiles would disagree though I am sure.

I may be replacing my Sena in the near future and am researching the Cardo units with JBL speakers. They seem to be getting good reviews.

I moved from the helmet speaker to ear buds years ago. I use Inked buds by Skull Candy. Inexpensive. Readily available. Plus, I went to Cabellas, bought their DIY ear plug kit for shooters. It is a two compound mix, that hardens once dried. It has a noise reduction value all to itself. I put the ear buds in, then slathered the compound in to fill my ear. Now I have custom molds. I have never had to turn the volume up over "2" on my GPS unit. Not much invested, but very happy with the results.
