Scammer websites selling GPS's

Have you noticed these scamming websites selling GPS ? I've looked around for a Zumo 550. Some of the websites that have prices $50-100 less than places like Amazon. They seem to be one guy operating out of at least a dozen websites, all out of New York City. The scam goes like this : you look up the item it says $529 for a Zumo 550, in stock. You place your order and the next day they call you with some bogus excuse like you credit card is expired, then they try to tell you you need to buy a battery and power cable for it even though the Zumo comes with those items already. If you refuse they hang up on you. When you call back they place you on 10 min. holds. They then say the part is no longer in stock and delivery now is 6 weeks. They hang up on you if you try to cancel, then charge your card.

Do your homework, please be careful, buyer beware.

This is why I bought my Garmin from GPS on sale. They have this disclaimer on their website:

CONSUMER ALERT Beware competitors that phone you after you place your order and attempt to sell you added items. The standard package from Garmin contains all that is needed for most installations. Don't be ripped off like THESE or THESE people. Click on the BBB logo on this page to see what a company report SHOULD look like.

Another scam is Garmin OEM products. Garmin does not sell an OEM product. The products that Garmin sells in a plain white box are actually refurbished products.

These will no doubt be the same operators that use the same sales techniques for cameras. They mainly seem to be based in New York and camera forums are full of threads from people who get stung because they do not perform even basic due diligence when they see what appears to be an unbelievable bargain.

It all comes down to using your own common sense. If it sounds too good to be true...

Google the name of the merchant and the word "review". It's a mine field out there. Even Ritz Camera online is a rip. There are good merchants. One of the better, cheaper ones is Buydig. They don't list the Zumo 550 anymore and the 660 release is delayed at the moment.

Yea, that was the one that I first researched and found many many bad reviews, pure rip off artists. They had a Zumo 550 listed for something like $529 new.
