Fantastic way to generate Garmin GPX files

This is by far the easiest, simplest, and most accurate way I have found to create a GPX file for Garmin nav's. Haven't tried it on the gps yet, but playing around with it in Basecamp, I see no reason why this shouldn't work 100%

Create route in google maps, past link to map in www.mapstogpx.com. Import .gpx file into Basecamp. The route you created shows as a track, right click on the track and select create route route from track. Upload to gps, done

You might find it does not do waypoints.

Have you tried Furkot instead ?

Waypoints seem to work fine. I've tried Furkot in the past and didn't like the interface so didn't investigate it too much. Google maps is the simplest and easiest way for me to make a route.

Googlemap does not create waypoints....something needs to be creating them - I guess that's what mapstogps does.

Have you played swith Scenic?

Over 50 thousand users, almost 1.5 million mi tracked, 10 thousand scenic motorcycle routes and an average 4 star app store rating. Why spend hundreds of dollars on an extra device while your phone can do the same and more? Find, Create, Import and Navigate great Roads and track your Touring Adventures. Although Scenic is designed for the motorcycle it's used by many old-timer and convertible drivers as well. It's basically for anyone with a motorised vehicle who enjoys a day (or longer) of touring.

ROUTE PLANNING
Scenic offers many many options to plan your tours: (1) Select a location and be navigate there along curvy roads. (2) Create a route yourself by dropping up to 200 via points with fast, short or curvy roads to get from one point to the next. (3) Import routes through many ways and many sources. For example: Scenic integrates with the Furkot, RouteYou and Kurviger.de online routeplanners and the Scenic WebApp makes it easy

Make the route in Tyre (PC) or their online version. Uses google maps and is just as easy as google maps BUT allows you to set waypoints and is not limited in the number of waypoints. Google maps is ok for shorter routes but a 20 day cross country route is impossible whereas it can be done in Tyre and then split into days or whatever makes the most sense. All the waypoints you define in Tyre end up as distinct waypoints in your GPS.

Tyre's "MyRoute" app is even handier/easier than Tyre. It is web based so you can access it with any machine, from anywhere (that has an internet connection). Easily create routes with waypoints and converts to many different formats and then loads directly onto whatever device you want. Has 3 different maps you can use. Google, TomTom Gold, and Here/Garmin. You can easily switch from one to the other and see how they differ. Has too many tools to list here but the handiest one I have found is the ability to override Googles "seasonally closed road" issue. Makes creating routes over the winter a lot easier. It also has the winding roads, hilly roads feature.

The latest developement is the ability to overlay gpx and itn routes to see where their respective algorithms differ. Allows adjustment for different gps users.

Because it is web based, you can easily share routes amongst your group.

Google "Google my maps"
Make your tracks
Export KML

Open in locus pro on phone follow track or make route with guidance and so many features....How about sat view 2 miles wide along your track...All offline.

Toss Garmin hardware on eBay...They will never catch up to a myriad of well designed phone apps.

I tried using my iPhone as a gps last summer, hated it. For my needs, I have not found a gps app that is as versatile and easy to use on the fly as my 12 year old Garmin. Same reason why I like Google Maps, it's simple to use, and has all of the right features for me.

I have detailed elsewhere on this forum what features I value in my gps, haven't found an app that works as well. Not to mention my iPhone costs about $1k, my Garmin cost me $50

I tried creating a custom route/map on Google Maps and exporting it as gpx file through mapstogpx.com. It worked a couple of times but for some reason third and fourth route import attempt failed on my Garmin 1490. Anyway, I'm subscribed to InRoute (IPhone), the app is packed with cool features along with the gpx export options. Importing routes to my Garmin is 100% drama free.
