Switched Power Supply Question

Hi All,

Just wondering if there is a place I can pick up power from under the seat that is turned on/off from the ignition besides the fuse panel?

I have a 2008 650 that's new to me with a few extra options. One of the options is a heated seat that has the on off switch mounted on the side of the seat so you can power it off/on while the engine is running, as it should be. The seat heater is currently connected to the 15 amp turn signal fuse and also has its own 5 amp inline fuse. Is the turn signal fuse the logical place for the seat heater to be connected? I know I can go direct to the battery but then the heater could be powered on when the ignition was off potentially draining the battery.

From VSRI. I'll copy rather than link because phones don't seem to be working there right now.

3. Best places to obtain Switched 12 Volt power for an Auxiliary Fuse Block Relay.

A. Tail Light wire. This is the Brown wire running in the tail harness along the left rear subframe. It changes to gray under the rear fender in some models. Note: This wire is HOT when the key is in the PARK or ON position. This is good to use if you what to run accessories without having the ignition & lights on. But, if in park for an emergency and using emergency flashers your accessories will be energized. This is my favorite, but I also install a small underseat switch to disable the aux box when desired. Brown wire also avail under fuse box 05 & up 1000 & all 650. Eastern Beaver Kit.

B. OEM heated grip connector. Located behind radiator on left side & usually taped to the main harness. A Black connector with 2 wires going to it. The Orange/Green (white/green on 2014 and later DL1000As, or Veeks) wire is Switched Hot and Black/White is Ground. If you do not want to cut this connector, then order Suzuki part no. 36852-06G00 (~ $11). This is the horn lead wire on all but the Veek and the connector will mate. Eastern Beaver Kit.

C. Rear Brake Light Switch wire. Located just forward of the battery. A small clear white 2 wire connector, one Orange/Green (White/Green on the 2014+ DL1000A) & one White/Black. Orange/Green wire is switched Hot, no ground wire available here. Motorcycle 2.8mm - 110 Connector and Terminals is one place to find matching connectors. 2 pin 2.8mm - .110 Male and Female locking connector is the one that matches and can be used to access a switched hot without cutting into the stock wiring.

D. Instrument Panel Power wires. Located inside left side cowling in wire pocket. Must remove cowling panel and strip part of harness cover off for wire access. The Orange/Green wire is switched & the red/white wire is full time power.

E. Any of the Orange (or striped Orange) wires under the OEM fuse box. You can just detach and pull the fuse box up to gain access. The Brown tail light wire is also here on 05 & up 1000 & all 650.

Question

Just joined..have a query...I am about to wire up a couple driving lights after much research got a pair rated 10 W each LED's. I reviewed wiring 101 etc and the mention of relays has me wondering if I need one. I have a two wire switch and want the lights on all the time for visibility. I assume I will find an appropriate switched hot wire for my Positap. I will wire up a 3 A inline fuse on the hot side. .....With only 20 W total do I really need a relay ??

If you use an orange/green wire, which is used to feed the heated grip connector, it will have enough capacity. Other wires don't have overhead built in so I wouldn't use any other color wire for an additional 20W or use the orange/green wire if it was already being used for heated grips. BTW, VSRI has its mobile theme down for repair so it is usable with phones which will see a standard theme until the mobile theme is fixed. Electrical

Would love a little help here. Set up a relay to support a fuse box and bus terminal but got no love when the ignition was turned on.

Tapped the white/green wire mentioned in the post before this one for the switched circuit to power up or down the relay setup shown in the first picture. That wire goes to post #85 which is the upper right post in the second picture. The second picture shows the relay with some indication of the numbering for each plug. The third picture indicates the wiring connections made to each plug (except for the #87 with yellow wire). The picture is not in direct orientation with the second picture which has the two #87 posts parallel and shown in the upper middle.

Where did I go wrong with the connections and why?

Here's a diagram of a relay setup for a switched power distribution box. The relay in the diagram has four pins rather than five, but the pins are still numbered the same.

You are correct, sir. I also was tied into 87A instead of 87. Did the switch to put the positive terminal onto 30 and moved the fuse box connection to 87. This made all well and good. And wired 87A to allow for an always-on cigarette lighter outlet for use by an air compressor should the need arise for airing the tires.
