wiring fog lights for dummies

okay, i'm the dummy. i have some fog lights i mounted so that i would have a "triangle of light" up front to be more visible. they look good, but they hook up with a switch that connects to either high beams or low beams. i'm wondering if there is a relatively easy way to connect the lights so that they just come on with the ignition switch and stay on regardless of high or low beams. any ideas?? please bear in mind that i am a dummy, especially about electronics.

You could wire them directly to the battery with a relay tied to the tail light so they come on whenever the key is on.

I wired mine to the ignition switch with a relay, but I have a switch to turn it off manually, just in case the need arrises

Check your state laws about using driving lights w/ high beams; some states require that they be off (a local inspection station can tell you).

This is one way, but as for me, I prefer my own switch that I can turn on and off no matter what headlight I have on;

What I did was found a wire that was HOT when the key is turned on. Then take a relay and run a wire from the pos. on the battery and put it on #30 of the relay. Now what you have, is a relay that will draw all of it's power straight from the battery, this is the nice thing about having a relay.

Then you are left with a few more connections, 85, 86, and 87, all on the relay. I'm heading out the door and can't recall off the top of my head which one goes where, some one will help you/me out here. A wire will go to a GOOD ground and back to the relay (either 85, 86, or 87).

Then a wire will go from that source that you found on the bike that comes on when the key is turned on. This will turn the relay ON, BUT, the relay will NOT pull it's power from that wired source, it pulls it's power from the battery (thanks to terminal #30).

Then the final port on the relay will go to the fog lights.

I appreciate it when the guy behind me doesn't burn his driving lights when I ride at night. It sure cuts down on the glare when you're the rider in front!
