Ham Radio on wee/attn k6ost steve
Steve, i live in Rosamond n/of lancaster and get to your area at least once a week. My first ham radio on a bike was a Yaesu FTM10SR on my DRZ400.This is the radio with bluetooth capability. I used a Blueant Interphone helmet bluetooth setup and got it working. For my brand new 09 dl650, i decided to take a different route.
I put a remote mount Yaesu ft7100 on the bike. The head is on top of the dashboard, and the body is under the seat. I went with the TALKSAFE outboard bluetooth box.Simple, plug it into the mic jack, pair it up with my Blueant helmet setup and i got 50w vhf/35w uhf. I put the PTT ON THE HORN THROUGH A RELAY. I had an aluminum extention plate mounted under the rear luggage rack that extends 6 inches and put on an NMO mount. I use a diamond nr72b,or the big boy Comet sbb7 high gain antenna. Have talked 100 miles simplex! The system works absolutely bitchen. I still need to mod the radio so it will do FRS/GMRS.For those interested,it WILL NOT DO CB,but does work well as a scanner too!Very wide frequency coverage.
Instal was easy, basically power routing, cable routing and plug and play. The audio and operation is way better then the Yaesu system. I have the TALKSAFE box [by rpf industries in the UK]mounted inside the right fairing so i can monitor the led indicators. This can be done with a handheld also using the TALKSAFE handheld bluetooth system. I got the radio used so have about $450 in the ENTIRE system, this includes EVERYTHING.For those interested, google the radio, the Blueant Interphone helmet bluetooth system and the TALKSAFE bluetooth module. Feel free to contact me if you wanna go for it,at the very least, for k6ost,ill meet you on 145.280- 131.8 and you can hear it live. I cant tell you how much fun this ham on the bike is and just about seamless. Just way cool,73 de wr6s,pat
