Transfering Apple iTunes music to GPS & Android Phones

Despite having two iPads and having bought over 4 iPhone's for family I am not really a big Apple fan.

Having said that one thing they have done very well is handling music with iTunes. I have used on older iPod on my Stroms (one that is not all-touch but has the wheel so that I can work it with gloves through a Ram Aquabox. I have a number of playlists but on one in particular I put every song I have liked or find and like. That way it can run for a ling time and I always have music I enjoy without having to fiddle with the device

My Garmin GPS units have been able to store and play music and have SD card slots but transferring playlists has been a major pain.

Last year I asked on ADV rider about transferring
playlists and was pointed to "Doubletwist." I used it a few times and was able somehow to transfer music and playlists to the micro SD card. It seemed a bit hit and miss and I wasn't really sure what I was doing. At one point I duplicated all my music in both iTunes and on the device.

What I found works for me is to take the Micro SD card out of the GPS or phone. Put it in a card reader and plug into the computer and run Doubletwist. When you click on "device" you will see a chart showing how much free memory, music, etc is on the card. Select "convert music for this device" as that should switch proprietary formats to something other devices can read. Up top, beside the "device" tab is Video and music. Select Music and from that select Playlists, etc that you want to sync. Once you have done that you just tell it to go ahead. If you have 16 gigs of music (like I do) then it will take a while to complete. (If doing it on an old netbook it will take a long time!)

Over the last few nights i was able to transfer all my music to both my Zumo 590 and the 128 gig micro-SD card on my Blackbery Priv (this is an Android device. BTW this will also work on a BB10 device.) My 660 has a lot less storage available as the maps are taking some of the SD card so I just transferred my Playlists and that worked fine. (Silly though as I don't currently have that plugged into my sound mixer.)

Be aware that if it's the first time you sync that music on the Sd card will be transferred to iTunes so I think it's a good idea to start with no music on the SD card. I also figured out that Doublesync doesn't see the SD card if it is in the device so syncs with the device memory instead of the SD card.

I don't know if this post is too rambling but I hope that helps some of you.

Yes I have to admit that one went over my head. As a long time Mac user with an extensive I tunes collection I recently transferred all of my music to my Samsung tablet by uploading my I tunes collection first to Goggle music, then downloading or playing it at my leisure.

If your playlists matter then I am sure that Doublesync can easily transfer it all. Do you store music on the on-board memory or an SD card? If on-board then plugging the device to your computer and running Doublesync should take care of it. If SD card then use an SD card reader.

I am sure I made it sound way more complicated than it actually is. I suspect that if you synced it now with your music on the device you would end up with duplicates so you probably should get rid of the music on the device before you start. Of course if the playlists don't matter then why bother?

Tom, does doubletwist re format proprietary downloaded iTunes songs to play on non Apple devices? I remember having to go through quite a process to unlock downloaded iTunes songs and re format mp4's to mp3's allowing them to play on my 550 from the SD card. Previously they downloaded on the card, but would not play.

Apple has changed the drm over the years which is why the process has changed.

I don't know for sure but don't think it converts drm protected songs. Evidently it converts Apple formatted music to industry standard files.
