Garmin Montana Series GPS

I'm looking to pull the trigger on a Garmin Montana Series GPS but I'm finding myself a little confused as to what you're really getting with each package.

Right now I'm looking seriously at the 610 but may opt for the 650, neither of which is cheap.

My specific question is about the maps and the display. How do you find the three inch display? I'd like to add TOPO maps to my system but at $171 USD per, I do wonder if it's worthwhile or should I just stick with the provided worldwide map package offered on the unit I'm looking at?

If any of you guys who are using any of the Montana series could chime in and let me know what's working for you, that'd be great.

I do about fifty fifty off-road to road riding.

Buddy of mine had one "he didn't love it", he kept it for about a year and then went with a new Zumo.

That small screen also throws me. I can see it being useful for backpacking (since you can stop and focus your attention on the screen), but it seems like it would be tough to see when the unit is mounted on the accessory rail two feet from your face. In that parallel universe where I would actually pay $400 plus for a GPS, I think I'd opt for the Zumo.

I've looked at the Zumo as well but it's the off road maps I'm looking for right now. The more standard GPS units will always try to steer me back to pavement. I need a unit that can hold an off road track and keep me on it without the need for a ton of waypoints.

I can't recommend anything with regards to Garmin as I abandoned the dedicated units like the 62 and 76 that I used to own, but I can tell ya that going with a nice ruggedized cell phone with an offroad app like Back Country Navigator (which lets you pre-cache map segments so you don't need data) is a great option, and much cheaper.

You sacrifice the touch-screen for capacitance (I carry a stylus), but you get better maps, all the features of the Garmins, and a much easier interface and loading/route/track creating options.

I bought a refurb phone with no Sim card and just use it on wi-fi to load, and it works as a dedicated GPS for me on the bike or hiking, or whatever. Have under $100 in it and it's doing a better job for me on and off the bike than the Garmins did (and from what I can tell better than the features of the Montana with a better screen and battery life).

Something to consider....oh, and you can swap between several off-road and on-road GPS softwares on the fly, most of them cheap or free...something the Garmin can never do.

Thanks, I'll look into that. Sounds a lot cheaper than the $700 plus they want for the Garmin stuff.

It's not a perfect solution, I don't think there is one, but it's working very well for me and I've used a lot of GPS units.

Never met a dog I didn't like, a machine I couldn't break, or a woman I couldn't tick off.

I use a Zumo 390, it has the curvy roads feature and it will not try to take you back to the major roads, in fact each time I have used the C/R feature the Zumo has taken me down dirt roads I never new existed.

I purchased the Aussie tropo maps for it from Ebay for $32aud and it all works great together.

After using the curvy roads feature it will be on any navigation system I own, it really adds to the adventure.

I also own a Zumo 350 but it does not have C/R so it stays in the bottom draw.

On TomTom app for iPhone it's called Winding Roads and I'd never have half the fun if I didn't t have that feature. So many wonderful side roads I'd never have the patience to find and with TT you can generally keep off the gravel if you wish to.

Anytime you want to punch it for home the fastest way ....just change route types. Paired up with Furkot to get some route ideas and start points....it's a low cost ( $50 for lifetime maps and voice nav for one region ie North America ).
iPhone 4 and 4s are under $100 many areas and a ziplock waterproofs them. No contest.

I have the Zumo590 on my Strom and the Montana on my WR250R. You just can't beat the Zumo for screen size and bells & whistles. I like the Montana for the screen customization and have no issues with its' screen size. I picked up my Montana used and it came with a topo map. I added the City Navigator road map so I could get turn by turn routing. GPScity.com has a Montana motorcycle package which comes with motorcycle mount and City Nav road map for $650 ish and you can get the Zumo 590 and a motorcycle mount for $850 ish. IMO the Zumo is well worth the extra $200. If you're on advrider, gpscity offers discounts from time to time. You can email [email protected] to see what they're offering. I got 10% off my 590 a couple years ago.
