Intercom suggestions please

Just trying to get opinions on intercoms, passenger to rider, and also bike to bike. I will do a search here but I'd still like to hear from riders because there may be some new stuff on the market. Here's what I'm trying to do: When I am two up on the Goldwing with my wife we use the Wings built in audio system/intercom connected to EdSets headsets. This works great for us. However, we ride two up on our V-Strom and need an intercom for that occasion. Also, I ride the Wing solo and the wife is on the Strom solo and we need bike to bike. ( We talk a lot cause we still like each other ) Is there any way we could set up an intercom system on the Strom and utilize the same helmet/headset combination that we use on the Wing. I was looking at a J & M setup but it looks like you have to buy their J & M headsets to work with their intercom. The Wing uses a 5-pin connector and I think the J & M is 6-pin, I'm not really sure. If I have to I'll get two new helmets or whatever it takes to make this all work. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

I really like my chatterbox system. the frs-x1 has audio, intercom, push to talk passenger and rider-to-rider. It works really well for me. They also make a bluetooth model to connect the cell phone to.

You're right about the J&M system. It requires the 6 pin headset. The beauty of the J&M set up is that the headset is modular, in that you get one headset and then select the lower cord you need, so you can use the same headset for the Wing and the Wee, simply by using different lower cords. I don't know that the Edsets will work that way, however.

That being said, I particularly like the J&M unit. It has both CB and intercom, as well as an auxilliary audio plug and cord that can be plugged into the audio source of your choice. You control the audio volume with a volume separate volume control from the CB controls.

The big drawback to the J&M is that there is no mount available for the Wee, and no one I know of makes one, so you'd have to be inventive and make your own. I'm told that one can modify the mount made for the Suzuki cruisers, to fit the Wee. My wife doesn't need that on her Burgman 650, as the CB mounts right on the rear brake fluid reservoir located on the left side handlebar. (where the clutch lever would normally be on a regular bike)

All in all, despite all of that, the J&M unit is well made, the CB is good, and the audio seems to be of high quality, and it's waterproof.

Hands down no contest best bike to bike and probably best rider to passenger is the collett system. If you can find an older 900 system on Ebay or elsewhere they are a little larger then the new ones but are probably an even better choice then the newer models.

Now here is my rationale for that claim.

These suckers WORK. The older unit comes with 6 rechargeable AA batteries and a charger. You can replace the batteries with any like rechargeable ones and use that charger to keep them charged. You can also simply put AA's you picked up on the road in them and get a good two and a half days of riding (at 10-12 hours a day on the bike, I realize not everyone rides like Tige and I do). I prefer this greatly to being tied to the bike and its already overloaded electrical system. And when camping I cannot always charge the thing so taking a bunch of AA's with me (I use them in my camera as well) is simple.

In addition they are designed like helicopter sets (based on) and are to mil spec so these suckers have no problems on the windiest days or in the worst storm.

And my favorite part of the whole deal: TCO! I spent about $300 on a pair of them about three, maybe four, years ago. One for myself and one for Tige. Since then I've had a battery pack burn up on one of them, and a break in the power lead inside the unit on the circuit board. Well I'm not about to PAY some suckah to fix em right? I take them apart, get out my soldering gun. Heck, I can even design a better lead that won't break right? Well crap, this isn't working and I've torn this unit down they are going to charge me a fortune to fix this sucker now that I've tinkered right? Now add to that I have a 6000 mile trip to go on in about a week! AND these people are in CANADA!!!!

Any repair on the collett unit outside of warrenty is $25. ANY REPAIR. Since I needed it back within a week I enclosed an extra $15 for shipping and sent it to canada overnight. I had it back three days later and the unit was better than new. All the "weaknesses" I saw in the unit and tried to fix they corrected. The unit has now worked another couple years without issue. I have encouraged Tige to send his along with a check for $25 even though it works fine just to have the stronger components installed.

I cannot say enough good things about the product and the company.

I also really like the "public/private" channel feature. Any collett unit can talk to any other, so you can expand your riding group anytime using the public channel. If you and your buddy want a private chat switch to the private channel. If you are buying 6 or more (group buy anyone?) you can have your own private club channel (the stromtrooper channel!) and anyone buying a later version can ask to be included in that club. (to change clubs you have to send the unit back and pay the $25 IIRC). I chose a snowmobile club in Saskatchewan (did I spell that right) because I figured we would never run into those guys.

I have read that the collett's are not suitable for "two-up", due to the two transmitters being too close together. If an "intercom" is what is being sought, better look close at that issue (I was going to buy the collett's until I saw this on a couple of sights). Maybe someone knows more.

There is extensive info on this site about intercoms (look under technology). The Autocom and Starcomm seemed to be well liked too.

Ed sets are pretty much the same as J&M (I had them on my Goldwing) so you should be able to talk to Ed and get any adapter you need.

I referee professional and amateur bicycle races (along w/ a couple of others here), and the Autocomm setup has worked very well for me in the past: http://www.autocomamerica.com/ When working a major race I usually have 2 or 3 handheld radios going one different frequencies so I can monitor everything; with the new Autocom setup you can transmit on them easily as well. Altho' I have not had a chance to try this feature yet, I will be in CA for the Tour of Ca, and I can let you know next month how it worked with all 3.
The headsets are tested to something like 130mph, and the new ones have an auto-gain feature for windnoise.
As I remember, you can get 5 or 7 pin configuration and they have GW interfaces.

I just noticed that you're in NE PA; Mike Flanagan - Iron Mike here, has my old Autocomm; he's in Williamsport, and works in Schyulkill if you wanted to look at one.
