Tom Tom One - Has Dirt Roads?

I was amazed to find that this unit, which has been discounted to $149, includes many back roads including most fire and forest trails ... at least here in AZ. Has anyone else used this unit for off-road guidance?

No surprise..! TomTom gets most of their data from Tele Atlas. Another major data provider is Navteq. And there are a few other providers out there as well. I'm not sure where Garmin gets their data, but I think from a combination of sources. Regardless, most of this data was originally from public government sources, primarily the U.S. Census TIGER files. The Census acquires their data from local, State, and other Federal agencies including the U.S. Forest Service (the reason you have FS roads), the BLM, and the USGS, as well as collecting some of their own data.

NOW, these private providers are constantly enhancing and value-adding to the existing data using their own methods including driving and mapping many of these same roads, but mostly in urban areas. Many rural areas, especially on Federal lands, remain from these original sources, which is why it is wise to beware of changes that may not be reflected in you maps.

With the growing interest in Personal Navigation, you can bet these providers are competing to improve the usefulness of that data, so you can expect to see some major improvements in the future!
