Galaxy S4 Active advertised as waterproof!

Time for me to buy a new phone, mine is 3 years old and becoming a little glitchy (Galaxy S). I am looking at the Galaxy S4 Active because they advertised as being waterproof up to 3 ft submerged, able to shoot video/photos in Hi Def. Has stabilization etc. not to mention faster (4G). Want to know if anyone has experience with this model good or bad?
I have really liked the S1 for the durability and many free apps. Use google for navigation which works ok. Would really like to mount this phone on the bike with no cover so easier use. Would be interesting to find out how good the video quality is, compared to a Go Pro. Have to buy the phone for $200 which includes a free tablet when trading in my phone. Anyway thanks in advance for the feedback. I know some are die hard Iphone fans and agree they make a good product, I just like the open source format of this OS.

I had an I Phone and got the S4 Active ( the waterproof one ) for the exact reason you mentioned-to carry on the bike. I have not set that up yet, but I am thinking it would be a good way to go to listen to Iheart radio on the road.

I don't use it for videos, I do think it takes a good picture but it doesn't seem to have image stablization as I get blurry pics often. Maybe the other S4 is better for pics and vids as it has a better camera.

I really like the phone. Like all of them it has a few quirks.

I have the S4, but I don't think mine is the waterproof one [must check that, maybe it is, didn't know they did versions of the S4- only know of it as the one model].

Fantastic pics and excellent video [I will try to get time to upload a vid from it if I can, very busy time leading up to Christmas though].

There is an anti shake mode for the photos and it does work, it is in among the camera settings.

Overall it is an excellent phone, lots of features I've not yet explored.

My last phone was a HTC android, it was a very good phone too.

I don't understand the iPhone popularity, the newest version only does what my old HTC already did, my new S4 android is ahead of the new iPhone in every way and the picture quality is better from what I can tell too.
Shows what a good marketing team can do I guess.

Look at the GoPro v Contour situation too, for most of us the Contour Roam2 or +2 would be more suitable than the GoPro, but GoPro sells better.

Mind you, I would use both- but in different situations to each other.

I switched from an iPhone 4 to the Galaxy S3 last year. Very happy with the S3 except for the camera. My old iPhone took better quality pictures than my GS3 does. The GS3 is good for outdoors pictures but if you get into a low light scenario, it sucks. I understand the the GS4 does better but is still not as good as some others on the market. The way I solved my photo problem is I got my Nikon point and shoot Coolpix P7000 out and started carrying it on the bike again. I don't expect my phone to do anything but the occasional snapshot (when I don't have the Nikon close at hand) anymore. Almost any point and shoot camera takes much better looking pictures than almost any phone will.

So, if you are coming from the iPhone, don't expect miracles out of the camera on the Samsung phones. The phone features and apps are much better with Android though IMHO. Unless you are buying the phone primarily as a camera, go with either the regular GS4 or the GS4 rugged and waterproof. Take a Canon or Nikon point and shoot for your photos.

Doug,

When the S3 camera is active try opening the "settings", then you may find there is a second "settings" icon, when you open that scroll down and see if there is an "Auto night detection" selection.

My S4 has this option and the settings icon is a gear cog, I'm not sure if the S3 used the same icons, but I suspect it would.

The S3 camera is 8MP where the S4 is 13MP, so it does make a difference to the ultimate picture quality, but you may find some of the picture enhancement features are the same between the two.

As I previously had a HTC Android I'm not familiar with the S3, my suggestion is solely based on the assumption that many upgrades in technology don't often involve a major revamp from the previous model.

I'm finding the more I explore the camera [and general phone] options, the less often I'm taking my Fuji camera.

For a major holiday trip I will take the Fuji, for rides and day to day work stuff I just use the S4 camera- it gives fantastic quality pics and I can post to FB, websites and emails directly from the phone immediately.

Thank you fellow stromtroopers for your insights and knowledge. Sorry for the late reply, been working long hours. I have yet to go back and look again at the S4 Active but have been inquiring among some of the tech people I work with and most own Android systems, including the Samsung Galaxy. None knew about the Active waterproof series and were very intrigued, as were the Iphone folks. I have had a Samsung Galaxy for three years and have been very pleased with the performance. I agree that the camera has not been the best so I do bring a Olympia waterproof point and shoot pocket size that travels everywhere with me.
What I am really intrigued with is if the phone is truly waterproof so it can be simply mounted and left exposed. Ockerstrom, I agree, there is a photo stabilization function, not sure if this can be used when shooting video. DouginKY, I agree, the camera function may not be the best, but would be very interested if I could set the phone up in a spot to shoot video by voice command! Realshelby, thanks for the feedback. I would be interested to see how this phone performs for you. I plan to spend some time with this phone tomorrow at the store and put it through its paces so hopefully I can give some more comprehensive feedback. Tiller4me, before I resort to a waterproof shell, I plan on exploring what a phone like this would offer. Need to update anyway. Thanks again for all the great feedback. I really enjoy this forum and all the well informed members that belong here.

I'm due for a new phone in a few months, and the S4 Active is pretty much the only one on my list.

I currently use my Motorola Atrix 2 (Android) phone running the app Dual Sport Maps mounted to my handlebars, and it works GREAT. It would be perfect if the phone were water resistant, so I was pretty excited to see this one come out for the same price as the standard S4.

I'm interested in knowing whether Samsung has loaded the phone down with crapware as they have past models.

According to the reviews I have read on this phone, even though the processor speed is improved, there are a lot of applications that run in the background which not only slow down the speed but also depreciate the battery life. I don't think there is a way to disable some of these "pay to use" apps other than a phone breaker, which is illegal. I believe most phones suffer the same problem so the phone will probably run as fast as anything else. What was recommended to me is to buy a rubberized frame that protects the edges of the phone since the phone is not as durable as the S4 (gorrilla glass version 2, not 3 in the S4). I have watched several demonstrations of people dropping the phone into water or submerging to take photos. Also show users wearing gloves and using the swipe function. Seems to work well. I have not sprung for the phone yet but sounds like it should work for my application.

My brother-in-law has the waterproof S4 and when I was over his place he put it in the sink full of water.

There was no problem with the phone but according to him it should work underwater.

It would not make calls until he removed from the water but it worked fine out of the water.
