SHould I get the Zumo 550, or the 478? Help

Not sure which one. I like the 478 as its more of an exporers GPS device. The zumo is more like a point and shoot I feel. But some funtions on the 550 I like and others I am not clear about. I really like the POI option onthe zumo, I do not think the 478 offers this. I also like the 3 d view of the 550 but can live with out it. I do not like the touch screen as I know it will scratch over time.
I am not sure about these zumo options:
Speaks street names: yes
3D map view: yes
Auto sort multiple destinations (provides most direct route): yes
Auto re-route (fast off-route and detour recalculation): yes
Choice of route setup (faster time, shorter distance, off road): yes
Route avoidance (avoid highways, tolls etc.): yes
Custom POIs (ability to add additional points of interest): yes
Hands-free calling with Bluetooth® wireless technology: yes
MP3 player: yes
Picture viewer: yes
Touchscreen: yes
Which the 478 does not have I think.
Can ya'll help me in this decission?
Thanks,
Toll

I don't have any experience with the 478, but I have a Z550 and like it very much. If you are at all careful you shouldn't have to worry about scratches on the touch screen. Much easier to use and read than my old Garmin V, hope it is a dependable and long lasting as the V has been.

It depends on what you want your GPS to do beyond telling you where you are.

I do like the engineering-based design functionality of the 478, and while it's easy to think of the Zumo as dumbed-down, after you live with it for awhile, that viewpoint does go away. It's actually quite elegant with a very functional interface.

For me, in the cage or on a boat, I'd prefer the 478. On the bike, it's the Zumo. It integrates GPS, phone, bluetooth headset, XM, traffic, and mp3. I've owned a lot of gps units, including laptop-based systems, and the Zumo has been easier to use than all of them.

I did the Zumo for 699 on ebay express. I do like the feature of the 478, but could do without the knob dicking when I should be riding. I ordered a 2 gig SD card too.
Thanks, its history now....thanks so much for help.

Angry Question: Has anyone been able to download the tracks from the Zumo 550?

I've been unable to download anything from the Zumo, no tracks, no waypoints, no routes or maps. Very easy to upload from MapSource any of these items, but not to download. My old Garmin 60C does it without any problem, is anyone else in the same boat?

Rider, during my GPS screening, I found this handy page, perhaps you will get more hits and help there.

Thanks Tollster, that did the trick, the latest software update fixed it. I saw that other people are having a problem with the rubber parts cracking and rotting off also. My two outside rubber parts on the GPS mount both fell off while I was on the road.

Hope I do not loose them. I got mine hook up and processing. I am doing MP3 conversions right now. I am so happy with this new tool. We did 265 miles today along the Delaware river national recreation area. This thing is great. It has plenty of tools that will keep me working my brain with.

Lovin my Zumo! The latest ugfrade took care of most issues, including the ability to turn off automatic recalculation.
I am running a 4 gig card loaded with MP3s. Rode more then 12 hours yesterday and never heard the same song twice... Pretty cool tool.
When it was lunch time I asked the group what they wanted.... we wound up finding a great BBQ place that was only 12 miles away.

Well, I've had my 478 for a while now and I have to say it's pretty disappointing. While the screen is nice, and of course it offers NEXRAD capability, I feel it fails as an all around GPS. The biggest complaint I have is entering alpha numeric characters is such a complete PITA. It takes a 1/10 th of the time with a touchscreen type GPS. The marine plotters use arrow keys which you have to scroll through the alphabet as well as the numbers. You better be pulled over when trying to enter in addresses or biz names, and you better pray you don't misspell something. I need the GPS for cage traveling more then the bike, so the 478's short comings make it real hard to like. The new SIRF chipsets in the Zumo's is much quicker and sat acquisition is better as well. I've pretty much decided to get a 550 and just use the 478 on my DRZ. At least I can use the XM receiver I got for the 478 on the Zumo.
