Understanding load limits

I'm looking at getting a Shinko 705 150/70/17R for the rear. It shows the load limit at 69, which is 717 pounds. Do I divide the total weight of myself and the bike between the two tires?

Or at 500 pounds of bike plus my weight of 230, have I maxed out that rear tire?

You have to split the weight between the two tires, i would guess that the rear has more weight on it when loaded, i'd have to get two scales to weigh it to see the difference between the two tires, but when i add 160 pounds to the bike, the rear sags more than the front, so without doing the math that i can't do, i'm guessing 60% total weight on the back with 40% on the front,, like i said, just a rough guess, someone with two scales could really give the right ratio between the back and front.

A Shinko 110/80-19 has a load index of 59, or 536 lbs. The rear 150/70-17 has a 69 load limit of 717 lbs.

Minus the weight of the bike wet (485 lbs) means you have a max load on both tires of 768 lbs (717+536 - 485.)

Being slow doesn't make a boring bike. I had a R1 which I thought was boring. Boring is a bike that doesn't speak to you. If you like what your bike is saying let it's voice take you to far flung places. - Vertical C

Thanks! That sounds a lot better haha.
I'm thinking about running the shinko in. the rear and the tkc 80 that's in great shape up front.

Look on the side of the bike for the plate that says your max weight front and rear. It will be less than the tires maximum load. When you load up your bags keep the heavy loads in front of your rear axle. Weight behind your rear axle will lighten your front end. Once when I was moving and loaded to the nuts I hit a truck scale. Had 22lb left front and back. Still handled like a charm.

On both my KLR and V-S 650XT, I put my tools (extra) up front (KLR panniers and on the 650XT in bags I attach to the crash bars) to help shift some weight forward. As noted above, the rear tire bears the most weight: sidecases, second rider / additional gear, and my fat butt. I noticed that the KLR front tire "digs" better with some weight.

Resurrecting an old thread here, but wanted to chime in because I too had the same concerns that I recently put to the test over the weekend. Over the past month, I had a new Shinko 705 installed on the rear of my V2, and had concerns taking it on the road at speed for extended periods with two "healthy" people onboard along with luggage for a long weekend. Bike is 502 lbs dry, so I'm guessing wet weight of around 530 lbs. Add Luggage + riders at 470 lbs and I'm at 1,000 lbs + the weight of farkles I've added (skid plate, crash bars, racks, top & side cases and other bits) and I'm approaching the 1,100 lb mark. Picked up the wife from her work north of Houston on Friday and rode to Hot Springs which is a little over 400 miles from her work, then back again on Monday. Temp got up to the mid-90's and the speed limit was 70 or 75 mph for 70% of the trip (asphalt and chip seal roads mostly). The rear tire did get very hot, and I did inspect it during fuel stops, but it worked out just fine.
