Tuktoyaktuk: what tires?

Hello,
Looking to go to the end of the road. Looking for a good confidence-inspiring tire for the last few hundred km on dirt.

I am looking for people's opinion as to how their tire performed based on their experience on that particular road. I expect rain, which makes it quite slippery. I would be putting on tires in Dawson City and, therefore, I would be riding on dirt the entire way except for about 40km both ways.

So, as I was saying, Mitas E-09? Michelins? Heidenaus Scouts??? Looking for advice on how they performed for you guys.

Well, I'm pretty sure I've seen posts here or at advrider dot com from people with experience riding to Inuvik on the Dempster Highway. But the all-weather road to Tuk just opened up a few weeks ago (November 15). I don't think anyone's been crazy enough to ride a motorcycle on that road in those few weeks.

There's a retired fellow from Tumbler Ridge BC who drove up to Inuvik ahead of time, and has driven back and forth to Tuk a few times already. He could probably tell you something about the road that might be useful. Check out this CBC article.

I lived in Yellowknife NT 1971-2001, and visited Inuvik many times and Tuk a few times, but always by air. A visit home plus riding to Tuk is definitely in one of my future summers.

I am going to Tuk in June this year, and Deadhorse, Dawson, Tok, Chicken, etc. I am going to use e-07 Dakars front and back. FWIW.

I was on Anakee Wild tires this year and they were fine up to Eagle Plains but I had to turn around there. They are a soft tire though and were worn out by the time I got home at 6000km's, so I think likely not the best for Tuk.

I am going up in June this year as well and will be on Mitas E09 Dakar this time.

The trade off is the E7 softness and handling versus the Scout K60s which will last but slipperier on pavement.

I have a feeling that it won't matter - it seems like there will be a parade of bikes going up there next year, making the road near as packed down as pavement! Heck, I'm even talking with my brother about going to Tuk instead of Alaska, but we will see...

2011 Wee-strom and loving it.

It might be crowded up there, no place to camp or sleep at the end.

It's like an artery that has just been unplugged, all these bloody people flowing through.

I was down in Utah at the Flying Monkey rally in October and many of the riders with 650s and 750 there where running the Motoz Tractionator Desert H/T. The Motoz factor rep did not have enough of them to sell to the guys who wanted new ones. I have run this tire on my small 250 dualsport and it was great. I run the Heidenaus Scout 60s on my 650 VStrom, but will be looking for a more aggressive tire when they wear out such as the Motoz Tractionator Adventure.

If you have not checked out the Motoz brand they are worth looking into I have had a number of their tires on my small dualsports and picked up a mountain and extreme hybrid tire for my DT200 while at the Rally.

It's all good until it gets wet. We had a girl do it in a Hyabusa with street tires...but she admits she was very lucky.

I think they call it whale snot...



We didn't do the Dempster but the Top of the World was squirmy even in our AWD. Even the construction zones are pretty epic....and long.
