Preload dial difficulties

I would like to be able to adjust the rear preload to fit my needs (switching between solo and 2-up). However, my dial won't turn at all. Well, maybe 1/300th of a degree. Has anyone had this issue? If so, what can I do to get that baby spinning again? Previous owner said he had it set at 5. I am new two motorcycle and could repair myself out of a wet paper bag, so please use small words.

It does get stuck if not used frequently. You could try to pull the knob off and grease it up. Mind the little balls and springs inside. They dance away easily.
Or take a big water pump plier and gently try turning back and forth. That may break it free.

Thanks for the quick reply. How much torque should I put on the dial when trying to "break it free"? On one hand, I don't want to be so gentle as to be ineffective. On the other, I don't want to crank on it so hard it breaks (as is often the case when I try to fix things).

Mine was stuck and I took the plastic knob off. Underneath is what looks like a bolt head. Put a wrench on the and turn it that way (so you don't strip the plastic knob). With wrench, it shouldn't take much effort to turn (at least in my case).

Do a search for preload adjuster stuck. Your case is not the first and I think you will find some more detailed instructions what to do. I never had to mess with mine so I have no first hand experience.

Try what Scott said. The nut the knob mounts on is stronger than the knob.

Just beware when removing the knob -- there's a ball and spring detent thingamawhatsit under there, so a small steel ball bearing will drop out when you remove the knob. Hook the spring out with a pick and set them aside for safekeeping. If you do manage to lose them, it's not the end of the world -- you just won't have the little "clicks" when you turn the knob.

With the knob off, you're looking at an 8mm hex. So treat with your favorite corrosion loosenator potion then GENTLY GENTLY GENTLY use a socket to break it loose. Be aware that it may already be all the way tightened, so try both directions.

Wiggle wiggle wiggle and worry it loose -- don't just grab hold and yank like some damn dirty ape.
