Michelin Anakee 3's

Wow, it's been quite a while since I've been on here, it's been a busy couple of years (plus I couldn't get my password reset after the "changes" and got lazy).

Anyway, quick question for all of you who run Michelin tires. I just put a set of the Anakee 3's on the bike and noticed a line running the circumference of the front tire. Being seriously anal about such things, as not wanting a tire to come apart and crashing, I called Michelin about it. I told them that it looks like a small cut but nothing on the bike is touching the tire (front) and it wouldn't be a road hazard that would do that. I was told to take it to the shop, have them look at it and if I need a new tire to have them put it on. I would have to pay for the new tire but they would send me a reimbursement check for it. I searched google for this forum and couldn't find anything about this particular issue. I finally found another person, on a Ducati forum back in 2008, that had the exact same thing and was told it was an anti static carbon strip built into the tire. I have never heard of such a thing and have never seen anything like that on a tire, ever. So..., I checked the rear tire since I haven't seen anything on that one yet. Sure enough, when I run my finger nail across it I can feel the same thing, just off center line.

So, are all Michelin tires made this way? I attached pics to show what it looks like...

I find it interesting that Michelin states nothing about it and, evidently, most people don't notice it if Michelin does this to all their tires. Guess I check tires much more than I thought. What surprises me is if this is true, why others don't seem to notice the same thing. I mean, wow, I would think everyone who rides a bike would check their tires religiously for such marks.

Strange indeed...

My guess is that it is a thing called "antenna tread". Go to motorcyclistonline . com and search for it. They have an article explaining it. I can't link it due to my low post count. Or PM me if you can't find it and I'll try and send the link that way.

I had it on my Anakees and was told it was an anti-static line built into the tire. They have been doing this for awhile, but I only noticed it on the Anakees. I have another bike with PR4's and don't see it.

It's an Antenna thread and should be in all tires. It's just harder to see in some vs others due to the silica/rubber compounds. It's made to disperse static energy as well as help provide a path for lightning other than your foot when it touches the ground.
Thanks for sharing the link. This is exactly the link I was mentioning earlier.

Thanks for the replies, very interesting reading. Imagine that, almost all MC tires have it and almost no-one notices it, weird. This is the 4th set of tires on my bike and the first I've noticed it. I guess you really do learn something new everyday...
