Michelin Pilot Road vs Pilot Road Trail?

Based on the universal praise these tires get, I'm considering forking over the massive $$$ to buy a set.

The rear tire that's "compatible" with the 2013 DL650A, according to the tire finder, is the PR4 "trail", coming in $20 higher than a regular PR4. Anyone have experience with both, are there real differences between them? Besides $20 more money for the "trail" and the fact that the front is only available in the "trail" version? If the rear "trail" is somehow better for the glee, I'm fine shelling out another twenty bucks. I'm just curious.

FWIW, I'm not intentionally going to spend much time off road/gravel road on the bike. All road use, some loaded two-up, some superslab, commuting, runs through the twisties down south (and up in Nova Scotia this summer!), rain, cold, heat... on pavement, doing all sortsa different kinds of riding. I'd say my riding mix would be 99.5/.5. There is a cool gravel road up to Meat Cove in NS that I'll be riding, but that's like 20 miles round trip. Not enough to alter my tire choices.

Thanks to any wisdom y'all might impart!

The only difference in the "Trail" rear PR4 is the compound. The TRail has a softer center compound than the regular version. I got only 5500 miles on a PR4 Trail, after getting over 8500 on a regular PR3 michelin. Not a big fan of these PR4's on a cost vs miles basis. I would go with a regular version if available.

I am running a non-trail PR4 rear with the trail front. 8K on them now and still plenty left. All slab riding, one up. Handles well and am happy with combo.

I've run PR1, PR2 and PR3s on different bikes and liked them all. I got decent (12,000 - 22,000! miles) out of them, and liked the way they felt and handled, so I kept coming back.
I'm now running the PR4 Trail tires on my DL650. Handling, braking and ride all seem good to me. I've put 7,000 miles on them: the front is doing great, the rear is getting close to the wear bars. I expected better mileage. I'll probably put a PR3 on the rear next.

As far as the 'Trail' designation: these are road tires, not dirt tires.

I have the PR4 in the rear and PR4 trail on the front.
I love the PR4 on my dl650 and I average 10k-12k on the rear. The trail version costs more because they don't make as many.

Thanks to all for the info-- sounds like the plain ol' PR4 rear is the one for me. Now, getting up off the $$$ required is going to be painful! Hoping to wear down the awful Trail Wings a bit more this weekend to speed me toward that decision.

Ride safe y'all!
