Front or rear tire provides primary traction??

I bought my bike as a demo with 800km on it. When I got it home it only had 18psi in rear tire, I filled it and it leaked. Turns out there was a nail in it. They plugged it and we're going to order a new Bridgestone trailwing.

I was going to order 2 new tires that were more aggressive for gravel as I found the stock tires swim a bit to much on the gravel. They said they would order me a more aggressive tire at no charge (I told them to get a Shinko 705, they ordered that and another type and will let me pick).

The guy ordering the tires said "all you really need is a more aggressive rear tire for traction anyways."

I thought I would need both tires to be more aggressive to maintain better control on gravel like I do with my klx250. Is he right that the rear is far more important? Or will I have to get a matching front tire instead or the trailwing?

I have worn out more dirt bikes riding true off road conditions than I have worn out street bikes. With the exception of an all out hillclimb condition I will take an aggressive/new condition front tire every time! Steering is the most important control you have on a bike, the rear wheel will for the most part follow. While having a rear tire with a street oriented tread or close to worn out will add a bit of sport to the ride, rarely will it cause you to lose the bike completely. With a street tread on the front, or badly worn, your chance of controlling the bike goes down exponentially! Nothing works in mud but an all out knobbie, and even those won't overcome the bikes notion to take a nap on you. But in the drier conditions, give me a very aggressive front tire and I'll make do with the rear.

BTW, a Shinko 705 is not what I call an aggressive tire.... the new 804 or 805 ( whichever one is for the front) would be an aggressive tire for gravel and dirt roads.

When I say aggressive, I just mean "more" aggressive. I ride 75% street and 25% gravel (soft/hard, whatever).

Appreciate the info, it sounded weird when he said that.

Mitas E-07, Heidenkau K60 Scout, and Continental TKC 70 are mid-aggressive.

Shinko 804/805, Kenda Big Block, and Conti TKC 80 are full aggressive.

What percentage of the time you're off pavement isn't the big factor. How difficult the off-pavement surface matters the most.

Here's more about the E-07. The Canadian supplier is out of stock, buy you can contact them to get a stocking date.

I'd go for the 804 / 805 I just put a set on about 1000 miles ago and love them. They work well on pavement and wonder less then the K60's I had on it before. Wear seems pretty good at this point as the front still hits the tities on it after 1000 miles of pretty hard use.
