Bike starts droning around 52 MPH

2012 DL650 I bought used (from a VERY reputable, meticulous guy) with 19K, now has 20K+. Front Anakee 3 was brand new when I got the bike and now has around 1300 miles, and the rear Anakee 3 has around 6000 miles and is worn flat from mostly slab but has plenty of tread left. The bike rides and handles great but I get this drone that runs from around 52 MPH on up and is only present when the bike is vertical. If I swerve or something it goes away. No shimmy, wobble or pulls. I'm confident it's coming from the tires even though I have Givi crash bars and read all about vibration issues. This is not RPM specific. It comes on at 52 MPH on up to 70 or more. I'm not sure of the upper limit, but I do know it's starting to irritate the hell out of me. It sounds like it's coming from the front. I've been running the pressures according to the manual at 33F/36R but it's consistent no matter what pressures I tried. Anyone experience this or have any other suggestions? I hate to put new tires on already, but I understand that may be the case. If so, I may try the PR4 Trails. I really like Michelin tires. Thanks!

I just wore through a set of A3s and I found them to be as buzzy (drone-y?) as other DS tires like the 705s I've had, although the tread pattern certainly doesn't look it. Several of my Strom buds have gone to road tires like the Mich PR3s or 4s and love them. Better handling, smooth ride, and excellent wet weather manners.

I assume you already know that the Mich PR4 Trails have the same tread pattern as the regular PR4s, just with a heavier sidewall construction for use on larger/heavier bikes. If you don't do much off-roading, their probably a good choice.

Just another thought….

Check your sprockets and chain for wear and proper adjustment, and your rear wheel alignment too. An improperly adjusted chain or worn/misaligned driveline can create weird harmonics at specific speeds.

I found my shinkos do the exact same thing. If I do a nascar tire warmup maneuver they only whine when I am going through the middle portion of the tire. On the side and it is quiet. I think it is just the tread on the tire. They don't appear to be cupping or anything I just think it is the design. Suxs but there are a lot worse things...

I have A3s on my DL. Even when new they were noisy. Just a slight off center I get the howl. Many riders have noticed this.
Run them out & try something else if it bothers you. It doesn't bother me, but some people don't care for the noise.

Yeah, the problem is that my riding speed around here is almost always in that 55-65 MPH range so the drone is always present. I can hear it building right around 50 MPH and by 52-53 MPH it's a constant frequency and remains at any speed above that. If I'm cruising at 80 MPH I can barely hear it between the wind and the earplugs, but slower and it's all I can focus on, barring wearing ear buds and playing music... or riding behind a Hardley ;-)

I guess I'll suck it up for the rest of this season and try the PR4's next year.

Try not to ride next to a concrete wall, either.

Is it your pillion??

Sounds like you're isolated it to road speed and not RPM, so tires, bearings, or chain/sprockets...but I'm betting tires. I had Trail Attacks that made little/no road noise. I've got K-60 Scouts now and the thing HOWLS on tarmac.

earplugs....

I'm betting it's just the resonance of road noise amplified by the faring design
