Elka shock on a 2012 DL650??

Has anyone installed an Elka Shock with remote preload adjuster on a 2012+ VStrom 650.

I did a few days of riding logging roads and realized I need to upgrade my suspension. The engine handled everything great but suspension wasn't up to the task especially on fast washboard gravel roads.

Did a lot of reading and decided on the Elka shock with remote preload adjuster. I contacted Elka and was told they can't guarantee fitment on the newer model DL650s because they haven't tested one on a 2012+ DL650.

So, has anyone have an Ellka on their Glee?

Really?! No one has updated their Glee suspension with an Elka? Has anyone put a different aftermarket shock on their Glee?

I put an Elka on a Wee. I didn't the Glee's was bad enough.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Elka on 2012

I put an Elka on my 2012 shortly after I bought it. Got it from SVracing.

Put about 15k miles on the combo, all street except for little detours through the occasional ditch, yard and some gravel roads. It was a good upgrade and was very usable on a road bike. Not having any off road experience I can't speak to its usefulness there.

I ended up trading off the 2012 and switched the Elka over to my 2005 DL. Other than a few minor adjustments ( I use slightly shorter dog bones on the '05 ) to the settings, it really improved the ride and handling of the '05.

Personally, I would spend the money every time, just to have the adjustability and option to have serviced when the time comes, but, as always, YMMV!

Thanks for the reply, it's nice to know I'm not the only one who would upgrade a Glee shock.

The Elka rep told me he believes the shock length is the same for both models of DL650 but the concern is about not knowing if there would be issues mounting the remote reservoir and preload adjuster.

Did you have any problems mounting the remote parts?

The Glee shock is a little longer than the Wee shock, within the length adjustment of the Elka. The remote reservoir and preload mounting looks to be the same.

My experience with Elka is so-so. Two shocks and each of them had to be sent back because it wasn't built as specified. I thought the pre-load adjustment range on the Wee (first gen) was surprisingly limited. They claimed that was done correctly.

The shocks eventually worked as I expected, but for the amount of money they charge, I would have expected better QC before the shocks were shipped to the customer. Add a $100 fee US customs charged me as insult to injury on the shock returning from service as if it was a new purchase (Elka mislabeled it in the customs documentation) and you may see why I'm not eager to do business with them again. It's a lot of money and there are other options out there, I'd recommend you shop around.
