Which rear spring weight?

I'm getting quite a disparity from suspension shops on which spring weight to start with. One shop suggests 10.6 Kg, another says 16 Kg. This is a big spread from people that "Know" this stuff.
I am 200 lbs (dressed to ride). I also travel with loaded hard bags. No passenger.
What spring weight has given you the proper sag with a similar load?
My best guess would be to start with something around 12 Kg?

How heavy are the bags and contents?

If you can achieve these setting, your present spring is OK...

i am about 220lbs fully dressed in my MC gear and ride solo mostly - on my L2, my rear spring rate is approx 11.2kg or 625lbs/inch (110nm Wilbur), and my feeling is that it is right if slightly on the firm side ( and i generally prefer compliance over firmness).

Previously on my Wee, i tried 550lbs inch, 600lbs and 650lb inch when i am about your weight.

Base on my experience, i would say try 10.6kg is a very good start and go up the next level if you really want a firm ride. The funny thing about these spring rate is that, on my weight, it needs about 20mm (i cant remember the exact number) of preload to get my rider/dynamic sag right. On all suspension books, it is suggested the preload should be only about 10mm to 15mm for street bikes, and 20+mm would be regarded as way too soft, and i would need to go to about 13kg spring to achieve the acceptable figure.

Of course i know otherwise based on the combination i tried... Is there something out of ordinary about Vstrom's linkage ratio to cause such a departure from the accepted norm - i am not sure. I would suggest the shop who suggest 16kg spring read the data from race tech or some other race orientated data book.

Loaded bags & on top luggage amounts to 40 to 50 lbs. My sag w/rider is 60 mm with out bags installed. (My front is at 40mm w/.90 springs.) So I think I'll need more rear spring.
I'll be attempting to go as light as possible so that when I remove the bags I'll still have some travel left.
Thanks for that link, PT. I didn't see that when I was on that site. It's good to get some knowledge of the particular machine.
I just returned from an 1100 mile trip & the bags are off, so I'm still in the research mode (no hurry), as I'm trying to save up for a new shock. $$$

Dug Bar was a real challenge on this bike with "Street" tires.., but I have skills.

I highly recommend an upgraded shock with the heavier spring. Heavier springs need more damping to control movement of the suspension. More adjustable and better engineered damping can also produce a controlled yet compliant ride without going over the top with extreme spring rates. I have a custom built Elka shock that the Elka factory set up according to my weight and riding requirements. They balance the spring rate and damping so you dont need to specify spring rate. I needed a shock that could cope with 2up full luggage (350lb load) and still be compliant when I am solo (170lb). I was amazed that they were able to achieve what I thought would be impossible. 2 up touring is now very tight and controlled with no rear sag or bouncing issues and I can ride much faster on bumpy roads. Solo is firmer but not harsh and all but the largest bumps are smoothed out nicely by the excellent damping. The only adjustment I need between solo and fully loaded is to wind up the hydraulic preload and a few extra clicks on the damping controls. The shock added 10% to the total cost of the bike but it has transformed how it rides - well worth every cent.

I should point out that my rear shock was Elka with wee when i tried the different spring combo, and Wilbur shock with glee. Yes on upgrading the shock in general.

Solo, I assume the 60mm figure was achieved using only stock shock and spring... On the 11.2kg sprung Wilbur, with my wife (125lbs with gear) and about 55lbs of luggguage. And preload on the shock cranked right up, I get a dynamic sag of about 53mm...

I too run 0.90kg spring upfront

Bear in mind that you want a spring which suits 90% of how u normally ride.

I had already installed 1.0 Sonics but ran them with no preload on the adjuster screws. I installed a 800lb Eibach spring and at first the bike seemed jacked up in the rear until I ran the fork preload adjusters all the way down, that was the trick, balanced it out. I weigh 240, bike has racks and 3 Givi trunks, centerstand, wife weighs 135 so we hope to try it out this weekend on a road trip for the weekend. Have been running no preload on shock but may turn it up some when loaded. Rebound on shock set like it was but may need more, time will tell. I built a 2x4 frame and used floor jack to change spring, easy.
