Need more ground clearance?

Just did a little 2up ride and was dragging my skid plate too much. What is the easiest way to increase my ground clearance a little?? I am 220 and 6'4" so I know 2 up riding should not be a regular event for me. But I would like to take this bike on some rougher roads and I am seeing some limitations?

You might like to say what bike you have and if your running standard rear spring on a wee it will definitely have to be upgraded, no amount of preload will help.

I've ridden two up with the stock '09 Wee suspension pre-load wound up and had no problem [tar, I wouldn't do two up on dirt with my Mrs. & she won't let me take another woman with me :biggrinjester: ].

Solo but way overloaded with camping gear still saw no bottoming out on rough dirt tracks.


Raising links are available for the rear [also referred to as "dog bones"].

If you are riding a "Wee", as opposed to a "Glee", apparently the DL1000 rear shock can be fitted in to the Wee, which then lifts the rear a little more as well.

Spacers in the front forks can lift the ride height a bit on that end too perhaps.

But are you sure it is the skid plate bottoming

The only time I've bottomed out on anything was my centre stand when I hit a causeway way too fast, the suspension compressed fully as I dropped in to the bottom of it, was still compressed as it came out over the edge of the concrete back on to the dirt road and caught the top of the ramp lip.

At 100 kg's plus passenger it is unlikely he can get correct sag thus compromising the slightly better than marginal ground clearance of a strom.
The standard spring rates are not far off for someone of my weight at 75 kg's so this needs to be addressed first before you would start going down the track of raising links etc. His definition of "rougher roads" could be quite something else as well.

Ah, sorry I thought my signature was working?? I am on a pretty stock Wee 2011. I know its my skid plate dragging, it has the drag markets to prove it. My bars in the triple clamps are at the very top and fully preloaded in the rear. Dog bones you say??? How much extra height do they give up?? Thanks everyone!

When that pic I posted was taken all the luggage was fully filled, 15-20 kg in each pannier box, 20 kg in top box, bag with tent etc. another 25 kg, even my tank bag had 12 kg of crap in it ... plus me at 90 kg [I'm pleased to say I'm holding down around 80-82 kg these days].

Maybe I'm not riding hard enough in the rough stuff.

You are right about upgrading springs and so forth though if the "normal" riding load is above the "average" the bike comes from factory set up with.

Dog bones or raising links come in various lengths to lift the bike to whatever extra height you want.
There is a set available that are adjustable which may suit you better as you can fine tune what you want to achieve.

I was going to buy the adjustable ones in the link above, but then a local inmate gave me a set that he'd had made up for his Strom and didn't use.

If you are happy with the travel and spring rate of the stock suspension and are just looking for more height, perhaps raising links for the rear and some spacers in the fork legs will give you enough.

Somewhere I've read someone pushed the forks down through the triple trees a bit...... not sure I'd risk it myself.

But Greywolf might chime in on that idea and whether it is safe to do.

I am interested in hearing the details on adding spacers to the forks. I plan on swapping out to stronger springs soon. How much would I add? How would it change handling? I also plan on adding the Richland Rich 1" dog bones.
