Strom curious in Texas

Hello all. I joined the forums because I am curious about the Vstrom 650. I currently have two bikes, a Harley Road King and a Kawasaki ZRX1200R. I'm starting to get the itch for something different. The Harley's a keeper for two up riding with the wife or solo rides. It's a very flexible bike but definitely not for off pavement. I love the power of the ZRX but it's sometimes overkill, has limited touring ability, and definitely no good off pavement. So if one bike had to go it would be the ZRX.

My brother just bought a KLR and is talking about doing some non-pavement riding. Not dirt bike type riding but more like maintained gravel roads, firm two tracks, etc. I struggle to get solid use out of the two bikes I currently own and can't really justify adding a third. So if I buy something else I'd like it to be tour capable, sort of sporty, and competent for light off pavement use.

I've heard alot of good things about the DL650 but have not ridden one. So I figured I would check out the forums and get the inside scoop from the experts.

Welcome to the Forum. By the sounds of things, a DL1000 would be a good choice for two up riding, touring and light off-road work. The DL650 works well, if you are prepared to change gears more often and run in the higher rpm. The DL650 may tick some of the boxes, if your are into solo riding. However, it would be best if you could test ride both engine sizes, so that you can have a better understanding of the difference in handling and power. The gen 2 DL1000 has ABS and is said to be better than the gen 1 Vee. Good luck with finding the ride that suits your needs.

I'll second what Gert says.
The 650 will go like stink but it isn't a torque monster.

I'll third what Gert says...difficult to argue with him on any V-Strom related topic anyway!

But also wanted to welcome you to the forum and mention that I know a fellow on Vancouver Island with the same unusual name as you.

Thanks all

Thanks for the warm welcomes and insight on the Stroms. I'm in no hurry and definitely plan to test ride both bikes in the near future.

My wife will only ride the Harley because of the big pillon seat, footboards, and tour pack/backrest. She has no interest in riding on the ZRX and it likely will be the same on a Strom or similar bike. So it would be strictly a solo bike.

My thought was the 650 might be sporty enough when stripped down for local riding, big enough for solo distance touring, and nimble enough for light off pavement rides.

Sounds like the Wee (650), would be the ticket for ya if you're gonna do more solo. Regardless, welcome to the forum and good luck!
