The funny thing is, I carry a firearm within fast reach 99% of the time I am riding, EXCEPT when I am commuting to/from work, so I was unarmed when the incident happened. After thinking about it, I don't believe that being armed would have prevented me from getting bit. I have concealed carry for about 15 years, taken several CCW classes, and participated in IDPA shooting competitions, and after doing all of that I have realized that someone's life or safety really needs to feel threatened before the gun comes out, or the armed citizen can quickly become the victim of the lawyers and messed up legal system. So, I can honestly say that I would not have shot the dog PRIOR to him biting me. Had he tried to bite again or stopped my ability to leave without threat of biting again, then I would have very much considered using lethal force if able. I am very glad that I did not have to make that decision in the heat of the moment.
I will continue to carry a concealed firearm whenever possible, but I am definitely going to be purchasing a pepper spray or bear spray that can be quickly accessed from a riding position for a less-lethal option.

Man...eff that dog...
I'd report it because for one, that could have caused you some serious damage and two...how about the next person?

I love dogs and have two, but I am wary of other dogs especially if they are a large breed that is known for violence. We have a lot of feral animals near where I live also. Not 15 miles from me last year, a woman in her 20's took two Pits that she had raised from pups, two dogs that had never been a problem, for a walk in the woods. Sometime during the walk they killed her. When her father found her the next day they were feeding on her corpse. You never know.

When I ride, I carry pepper spray on a quick release attached to a strap on my jacket. I also always carry a .38 revolver loaded with +P hollow points and I am a very good shot. Both are equally for two legged and four legged violent critters.

I was riding my SV650 last year when I came up to a woman screaming as she tried to restrain her German Shepard, who was about to be attacked by a pit bull that was charging down a long drive way. I blocked the driveway and started revving the SV, it has a custom exhaust with a real nice snarl to it. The pitbull stopped short and hesitated long enough for his owner to call him off. Glad I wasn't riding the 'strom, I'm not sure it could scare off a kitten.

I wish certain folks who live outside of town realized that people have a right to walk or cycle past their property without being harassed by their pets.

Dog bites are no joke, I’ve had friends nearly die from sepsis from one small tooth puncture.
For years I lived next to a rural junkyard on a desolate country road.
I occasionally had to stop at a stop sign adjacent to the Junkyard and the dogs were quick to learn my schedule and it was amazing how they worked as a pack and hid in wait for me in the initial days of my interactions with them.
The owner could have cared less about my concerns and I had to figure out how to deal with the problem.
I’m a lifelong dog owner and animal lover, that being said, I’ll kill a dog in a heartbeat if attacked but I really didn’t want to start a war with my neighbor by killing his dogs and fully understand the need for them.
What I did was kind of ridiculous but thankfully worked well.
I geared up by taping newspapers around my calf’s inside my boots , wore all my leather one day, open carrying my 9mm for backup. I had a pump spray bottle filled with ammonia in my tank bag and ten M80s.
I pulled up to the stop sign and started hucking M80s, the first one had them all hauling ass but I threw all of them for good measure, chasing and screaming at the dogs the whole time.
Those dogs never bothered me again!
