After not riding for forty years, I got myself a sweet '09 DL650 the other day. Figured I better hook up with some of the culture surrounding these things. Boy! Motorcycles have sure changed since I sported around on a 1973 Honda CB750. Anyway, I hope to clock some road miles soon. Looking forward to some camping and travel.

Hi John -

Welcome back to the world of riding! I also took a good many years off from riding and have an '09 DL650 that I bought 4 years ago with 1200 miles and it now has 22k. When I first got back to riding, it was a '78 CB550...great bike, still running strong for its 3rd owner.

You'll like the Strom as its a great platform. Same sort of power as your old bike, better power delivery and 6 speed transmission. Fuel injection so no choke, carbs to balance or clean, much better lighting and brakes (many will scream that the brakes are a weak spot on the Strom and they can be improved with upgraded calipers but a set of sintered pads make them substantially better than any Honda from the 70's with their single disc front and drum rear, lol) easy to maintain and well-documented reliability.

Did you get lucky enough to have some of the accessories already installed? (Center Stand, Top Case, Side Cases, Skid Plate, etc.) If not, a roll-down waterproof duffel on the pillion seat makes bike camping possible for low investment and no problems

Have fun getting reacquainted with the sport and welcome to Stromtrooper.
