My name is Max Power and I have a motorcycle problem

South central Ohio
Current bikes - gen 2 FZ1, XR650L, 400EX, Wolverine

Looking for a good reasonably priced 2 up long distance platform so BigB suggested I join up and have a look around.

So tell me what to look for and stay away from, and let me know if you have a nice machine for sale.

Welcome to the forum, Max.

I don't do two up touring but the DL650 will handle it with ease and so will the DL1000. I only know the Wee and am more than happy with my 2006 and we have done a lot of touring together.

Poke around, there's a lot of info here on both.

What he said but with a DL1000, also a 2006.

Stroms are pretty dependable bikes and in most surveys/test rides they never get the top mark in any category but consistently finish near the top in every category. Think a swiss army knife with wheels.

Most common thing you will read on the difference between the 650 and the 1000 is that the 1000 is a bit better on long strips of highway at speed. you pay for that with less gas mileage overall though.

Biggest complaints;

Buffeting at speed, fixable with a change of screens.
small kickstand peg, fixable with something like this: https://www.adventuretech.biz/suzuki...tand-foot.html
No stock center stand on most models until recently
narrow mirrors, fixed with extensions; https://www.adventuretech.biz/suzuki...extenders.html
Long legged folk will want peg extensions too: https://www.adventuretech.biz/footpe...ering-kit.html

All easily dealt with for a bit more cash. All my links are to Adventuretech becasue Rick is a regular here and provides a good product, and I've purchased all of the above from him (except windscreen).

2014 and later DL1000 Vstrom.
I purchased mine as a new/leftover for sport-touring and long-distance travel.
Huge torque, effortless acceleration, and relaxed freeway flying. Not a high-rpm screamer, but with the torque at 4K rpm, there is no need to wring its neck. Gas mileage is 45-50 mpg, but I dont ride a motorcycle to hypermile. With your bikes, consider the '14+ Vstrom1000 to the 650 as you would your FZ1 vs the FZ6.
I couldnt be happier with this bike!

Bring that fz1 to NW Ohio, and you can talk me into an even trade for my Wee!!

But seriously, good luck with your search!

I'm not so sure the later models came standard with a center stand. '18 is still shown as an accessory.

Never heard of this, certainly not true for the 2017-2019 650’s in the US market. Not necessary anyway.

I owned a FZ1 before. Man was it fast. Glad I sold it before I got into serious trouble with it.

Thanks for all the info fellas. The FZ will probably be for sale and I’m not opposed to a trade. More interested in a 14+ 1000 but anything is possible at this point. I’ve owned it since 2010 and 750 miles. Longer than I’ve ever owned any bike. Kind of part of me at this point, but it hasn’t seen many miles since I picked up the XR.
