Planning a trip from Asheville to Orlando

I'm contemplating a trip from Asheville, NC to Orlando, FL in the next few weeks.

The fact that I'm mentioning it here indicates that it will be done via motorcycle.

I'm planning on staying off the Interstates and was wondering if anyone familiar with the area can recommend a route.

We'll probably overnight about 2/3 of the way in a hotel.

Thanks,

Norm

I would check with Floridians to determine if Plecia Nearctica are in flight. Any sign of them, and I'd abort.

They are a summertime delicacy.

Right! The August-September flight should be over. Me forgets the season but after 26 years in FL, will never forget THEM!

From Ashville I would ride down Rt. 28(it's a great road) as far as you can into GA. You can pick up 75 and str8 into the flat lands.

2007 Aprilia Tuono (black) 20k
2005 Suzuki V-strom (black) 53k, still going...

notice a trend?

Avoiding highways, yet a direct trip? Take the Route 66 of the east. 441.

U.S. 23 Great Smoky Mountain Expwy west to exit 81 just west of Sylva, NC. 441 Will take you directly into Orlando and further south!

Thanks all,

AshevilleThumper, I'll be riding with a Harley which precludes most dirt/gravel/sand roads.

Toycloser, thanks for the suggestion, I've ridden 28 from NC but since it's gotten colder, I'll probably try to get down the escarpment to the relative warmth of SC quickly via Hwy 25. I'm also trying to stay off the Interstates.

Zeprider, I know I'll be on 441 at some point. Probably not through Petty's hometown, though.

So far I'm thinking of staying on 25 to Greenwood, SC where we'll pick up 221 and follow that until US1 splits off in Georgia. We'll probably spend the night somewhere near Jacksonville, FL where we'll pick up 17 and generally follow the St. Johns to Mousetown.

I've looked at a couple of routes on Google Earth and am dragging route points into green areas between my destinations. This is going to be a relatively leisurely trip with stops to visit friends along the way. The return trip will probably involve A1A as we hug the coast through FL.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Norm, I've made a number of trips south to Fla. and the Ga. Coast. Here are a few options to consider:

SC 11 to Westminister, then US123 to Toccoa.

Ga. 17: From around Toccoa, you can follow this all the way to J'ville. Only traffic is around Savannah until below Richmond Hill. Ga. 99 makes for a nice diversion through Crescent Ga. to Darien, where you can pick up a healthy dose of fried seafood at The Buccaneer Club or Mudcat Charlies. Also lots of places to stay from Savannah down. St. Simons Island would be about the best, with nice lodging options and a wonderful selection of restaurants. Traffic can be a bit heavy at times though.

Ga. 15: A little more inland route, you can pick it up in N. Ga. as it is coincident with Hwy 441 from NC line south to Athens/Watkinsville, but tie in anywhere below Athens makes for a good ride. Follow it to Folkston where you can pick up Ga. 23 (121) to Macclenny Fla. Avoid US 1 into J'ville if you can.

Other Alternates: Ga. 305 (pick it up just east of Wrens) to 56 to 192 to 23 through Metter Ga, to 121 and eventually back to Ga. 15. I rode this a couple of months ago on my way to Savannah, and it was just a wonderful no-traffic route!

Another nice alternate route is Ga. 22 from Comer (east of Athens) all the way to Sparta, where you can pick up Ga. 15.

If you find yourself further west passing through Dublin, plug the little town of Oconee in your GPS, and take the county road that parallels the east side of the Oconee River, and avoid 441. Heading south, look for Sparta (on Ga. 15), Oconee, and East Dublin.

And if you are anywhere just south of Vidalia around lunch or dinner, look for Benton Lees steakhouse, a little of the beaten path on the Altamaha River.

Have fun, and let me know if you have any other questions..!

Just another suggestion: Avoid 441, especially through Milledgeville and Eatonton. A lot of 4-lane and not much more scenic than an Interstate. The GSP really likes to patrol this road, mainly because it is soooo easy and tempting to travel at legal+ speeds..
