Sometimes you just gotta call it in... (bad driver rant)

I am a freelance photographer and I shoot kids/teens sports portraits and action. This past Saturday I was on my way to a shoot at Monroe, Ga High School and I witnessed a bad driver.

When I was mapping out my route, I saw some nice, curvy roads that wouldn't take me too much out of the way of my destination. So, I plotted my course and took off.

So, I was zipping along (within 10mph of the limit) on one of the back roads and I notice someone ahead of me in a dark gray Explorer that is driving erratically. I'm not just talking about getting close to the double yellow center lines, I'm talking about driving around left turns with half the SUV in the on-coming lane.

When I see people driving like this, it really concerns me and usually makes me upset. So, I sped up a bit and got closer to the SUV and give him a hint that his driving sucks (flashed my passing lights). I see the passenger sit up straight and turn around for a look. The driver continues to cross over the double yellow lines, sometimes even on straighter sections.

I immediately memorize his number and then backed off and headed to my destination. As soon as I got to the H.S., I called the local Sheriff's department and report him as a possible drunk driver. I gave them the tag, color/description of the vehicle, and which way he was headed when I last saw him.

I really don't know if he was drunk, texting, or just shooting the **** with his buddy in the passenger seat, but I really hope the Sheriff caught him and harassed him a bit.

All I could think about is if myself or another motorcyclist were heading in the opposite direction on that road only to come around a right-hand curve and eating SUV grill. I just don't understand why people have to be so damn lazy when it comes to moderately-to-severely sharp turns and constantly cross over into oncoming lanes. I live on a road that has a few long curves and I see people on a daily basis that cut across the center when going around the curves.

I don't think I've ever seen someone get pulled over for crossing over into oncoming lanes, but I see people getting speeding tickets all the time. I think that cutting the corners is more dangerous, to a certain extent, than speeding. :cursing:

Cliff Notes: On my way to a photo shoot and I see a driver crossing over the double yellows on left-hand curves. I call them into the local Sheriff's office. Bad drivers make me mad.

It must be nice to live in an area where there are so few bad drivers that you can do this. If I called in every bad driver I saw, I'd never have time to do anything else.

I see a ton of bad drivers, but this guy was exceptionally bad. I specifically had chosen to ride that road because I knew it would be less likely to have someone putting along and slowing me down. It was around 7:00am on a Saturday so I figured he was still drunk from the previous night. I had to call him in because I was afraid for the safety of others.

Yeah, if the really seem to be dangerous, not just your average crappy driver, it's best to call the cops. Too bad you couldn't pull over and call from a cell phone. It's likely that the guy was nowhere to be found by the time you got to work.

Yeah, I know. I figured that he'd probably got away with it, but I had to try. I was already running late for my photo shoot, so I was trying to get there in a timely manner.

On the low side, of course.

Otherwise people may take you for a hypocrite.

Sometimes 5~10 under, sometimes 5~10 over. Hypocrite? Nah. Driving within 10 is standard practice in my area. And I do not cross the center line on my bike or in a cage.

Subicon, don't stop doing what you feel is right. I've done the same a few times. Below was the "most" interesting incident.
The wife and I basically were in the same pickle about 4 years ago coming out of Manchester, VT. A Friday evening in the fall, but the guy was from CT, even on the straights he was riding in the other lane, never mind the turns. Every time he came to a left hander he was in the other lane, forcing traffic off the road. Of course our cell phones didn't work, no answer on the CB when we tried to raise an LEO. We were headed in the same direction, so we stayed behind him ( I wasn't giving up, I wanted to be there when he wrecked to fill the LEO in). After about 10 - 15 minutes of this, I spotted an LEO coming out of a side road, I pulled over on a lawn and my wife and I bailed like scalded cats and ran to the cruiser. We gave him the plate, description of the vehicle and driving. He stated "The X vehicle in front of you?" We stated "yes". He said thank you and lit out of the side street pronto. We got our car off some guys front lawn and continued in the same direction to reach our destination and about 5 minutes up the road we saw the Sherriff with the guy on the side of the road. The driver did not look happy. Who say's there is never an LEO around when you need one!
