Trip April 3rd - 6th

A group of 4 of us is going to ride out on Thursday 4/3/08 to the dragons tail. We are planing on staying @ Cherohala Motorcycle Campground on Thursday night. And going to head to Gatlinburg on Friday to meet up with the wifies and a couple more friends on bikes. (wifies driving a cage up their on Friday) We got a cabin reserved for Friday and Saturday night. As of now the plan is The Tail, Cherohala Skyway, Cades Cove, Gatlinburg over to Cherokee (441). Any roads or sites that you guys can recommend would be great. Thanks, Travis

back in May. It was great during the main part of the day. But I had to scrape ice off the bike a few mornings. I can only image it being colder and wetter in April. Bring all the gear you have!

Cabins

The cabins at the camp ground DO NOT have heat and do not have insulation! Bring an extra blanket or your sleeping bag. Have a good and safe trip, enjoy. Also another little tip, is to bring along a multi-plug outlet. The cabins only have a double electrical outlet, so if you want to charge several things at once you will need the adapter.

When we stayed @ CMR last November (the last weekend they were open) they gave us an electrical space heater.
It was in the 20-30's and we stayed very warm.

River road (south off the skyway) to bald river falls, then gravel up North river road back up onto the skyway is a nice stromable diversion.

Gravel roads starting off of Indian boundary rd (north off the skyway) is fun & stromable.

Have fun but be extra aware on the Tail. Unless things change for the spring, which I don't expect the TSP are ALL OVER it and highly profiling motorcyclists. I would suggest riding and patronizing NC and staying the heck out of Tenn. Not very rider friendly at this time. Be sure and check out the Tail websites, lots of info there about the situation.

I'm also a Subaru club member (NASIOC.com) and I've seen reports over there about the TSP harassing riders and drivers and making it clear that they are not welcome in TN. I know I wouldn't venture into TN just to make a stand on how I feel about their treatment of other enthusiasts. Maybe the business owners will make a fuss when they see profits go down.

Personally, there are plenty of other roads that are just as enjoyable, and without the hype and attention of the Tail..

Some of the more aware dinosaurs warned of the dangers of an iridium-enriched nuclear reactor. 'If this thing goes off', they warned, 'there would be nothing left but cockroaches and mammals.'

Get a Delorme Atlas and plan out your own route. You don't even need to go out of state as there are tons of curvey roads in north Ga.

do your homework. there's a ton of stuff in n. georgia and western nc to ride. sounds like you have a good trip planned already though.

gazetteers are excellent for route planning.

good luck

Thanks for all the advice. The reason we are not going to just north Ga. is the wifey loves Gatlinburg. So I have to make her happy to. You guys that live around me send me a pm with your phone number and maybe we can get together for some rides. I got 3 or 4 peeps I ride with now, But I'm the only Strommer. Later, Travis
