Pet peeves about forum use, brakes and quotes.

1. I mentioned elsewhere that brakes slow or stop the bike while breaks is what happens to the bike if it can't be braked in time. Brakes are there to prevent breaks.

2. In most cases, quoting is a waste of space. Use the reply button instead of the quote button unless you are referring to a much earlier post and the context would be lost without it. Whenever I see somebody quote a 5 paragraph post followed by a "Thanks for that", I have to find the pill bottle. Avoid or trim quotes whenever possible.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

If I had your address I'd send a bottle of aspirin or a 750ml bottle of the painkiller of choice.
When I quote I try to use an abbreviated segment of the statement in quotes to give the poster the benefit of statement issue.
Some of the full page quotes do seem like overkill especially when a few people do the same thing.
Kinda like listing their entire lives collection of motorcycles with mods.

Not using Quotes

While I understand using quotes increases the size of the post as Greywolf stated, not using the quote does not associate your post/reply to a particular post.

As my profile shows I joined the forum in January 2018 immediately after buying my 2003 DL1000. There are many things about this bike that I don't know and have questions. For the most part my inquiries have gone unanswered, the only time I actually got an answer was from a personal message I sent to Greywolf.

Even that was met with a degree of criticism as Greywolf stated he would answer my question but in the future wanted me to post questions to the open forum. That's great but at that point I had received no response for the forum and that's why I directed my question to Greywolf via private message.

Maybe I don't have something setup correctly so I see posts in response to my questions or posts. So at this point I am stuck spending hours reading long threads to try to answer questions I may have, instead of being to simply being able to ask a question and get an answer which is why I joined the forum in the 1st place.

If you are replying to the previous post, you don't need to quote. It's obvious where the reply is directed. If you're replying to a post that has multiple statements, you only need to quote the relevant passages - no need to quote 7 paragraphs when you're replying to a single one unless you're replying separately to each individual statement (as I have in this reply).

How long did you wait for a reply? In most instances on this forum, answers are given very quickly but having to wait 2 or 3 days for an answer is not unreasonable. Patience - you need someone with the knowledge that you seek to reply. Not everyone is constantly waiting beside their keyboard to answer your questions.

The whole point of this forum is to benefit the entire community by sharing information. If you only answer by PM, it kind of defeats this. I agree with Greywolf -- post the questions (and answers) publicly.

Patience, man. Not everything can be answered in real time. As I mention above, you need to give time for those with the knowledge you seek to come forward.

How did we ever get by before the Internet?

We are happy to help, but surely you have noticed that there are years and years and years of information and even "sticky threads" concerning questions, procedures and or issues with these bikes? If you are not wanting to pilfer through the appropriate section, my recommendation is to use "GOOGLE" and literally type in the question you seek and answer to, Google will almost always link you back to this forum to the appropriate threads.

Plus, although this seems to have turned out to be a mostly US-centric forum, there are quite a few of us on here that live elsewhere. There's a whole subsection on Australia/New Zealand, but there's also quite a fair amount of posters from Europe. If any of those people happen to know the answer to your question, don't be surprised if it takes up to 24 hours before they even become aware of your question: They're asleep when you're awake and vice versa. And then the speed of the answer still depends on whether they've got time to answer - some of us do have a life outside this forum.

Oh, and while we're ranting anyway, can we get rid of the personalised font as well? I agree that occasionally a non-standard font, bold, italic, all caps, increased/decreased size or something else attention-grabbing may have its uses, but consistently posting everything in a non-standard font is a bad idea IMHO. Not only is it pretty annoying, but it also only works if the readers browser supports that font. If it doesn't, a substitute needs to be found. Which may lead to all sorts of other issues, including posts becoming completely unreadable.

We're not a paid helpdesk. I'm perfectly willing to spend some time here answering others peoples questions. But if I first have to adjust my browser settings to cope with non-standard fonts, or find my reading glasses to deal with fine print, or something else before I can read the questions in the first place, I'm not going to bother. Similarly, if I have to wade through multiple paragraphs of drivel or several layers of nested quotes, before someone gets to the point, I'm simply going to ignore things. If YOU want ME to spend time answering your question, then the least I can ask is that YOU spend time making your post as readable and to the point as you can for ME.

Note I even called two local Suzuki dealers and they had no one even familiar with the 2003 model and referred me to the useless service manual.

So anyone else looking for the dealer diagnosis port on a 2002-2003 DL1000, here is that actual location;

It is under the left side rear side cover near the voltage regulator. It is also a white connector with a rubber cover, but it only has 4 pins and two wires going to it. To activate the dealer mode simply place a jumper between the two wires in the connector. I use a paper clip that I cut and bent for the job along with some heat shrink tubing to protect from shorting. See attached image.

I just used the google Custom Search box at the top of this page. Typed in "Dealer mode". First non advertisement link that comes up tells you what you need to know.

I am one of those that often answer posts even when I am sure the OP didn't do much research. It can be a learning thing for everyone.

I am very tolerant of those that claim they tried to search or post about info needed.

I just cannot see anyone searching Google for hours and not finding an answer when my first attempt took seconds to net all that is needed.
