Are you here to talk about motorcycles, like I am?

If you are tired of seeing Trooper Arena posts and wish you never joined that forum, I've found a way to adjust a members profile so threads in that area are never seen again. Send me a PM and I'll make the change once. Don't ask to be let back in if you decide to do that.

It's fine that people who like discussing controversial subjects have a place here to do so but it isn't everybody's idea of what should be on a motorcycle site.

Here's a warning for this thread though. Don't bring up controversial issues in this thread. Talk about it in the Arena if you want. I won't even be able to see it. Big B moderates there. Abuse this thread with stuff that belongs in the Arena and you might find yourself losing access there.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Sometimes, mostly when bored or sick, I peruse or participate there. But it would be nice to see the "ACTIVE TOPICS" button split into "Active Motorcycle Topics" and "Active Off-Topic Threads". The latter would include the Trooper Arena and Member Therapy sub-fora. I'm not tired of seeing updates from there, but sometimes they are pushing on-topic stuff off the bottom of the 20 item page limit for "ACTIVE TOPICS".

(This is not a request for that irreversible thread visibility change.)

Isn't the special sign in to the Trooper Area a firewall of sorts?
It is a Group W bench of Srtom-dom. Interesting but not for everyone.

Yes. This will only apply to moderators and people who signed up and later wished they hadn't.

I made the mistake of wandering in there for the first time a couple of weeks ago...it can get pretty ugly over there. Found out TMI about some folks on here that tended to (subconsciously) temper the respect I had for them based on their knowledge about motorcycle topics. Never again for me.

I am here to communicate with friends. To discuss a multitude of topics that relate to our common interests. I can open what I want and ignore what I want. I guess I am not sure what we are trying to prevent here. Is not the Arena like the adult tape section at the VCR store used to be?

I have been away for a while and would comment that my return has been a little discouraging to me. Lots of members are gone, either because they tired of the site or the "big brother" attitude. The new security likely has contributed too.

This may be something that is not noticeable if you are here every day......but leave for a while and return and it is obvious.

Maybe I am just used to ADVRider.

What "big brother attitude" are you referring to? I see none here at all. The rules are the rules and you agree to abide by them when you sign in. It is fairly, if not very, simple. If you don't like the rules then don't sign up. ADV has different rules and they are their standards, that are obviously set lower than they are on here. All forums have periods when folks leave/join in numbers but that is the way that life is, not the "attitudes" that you seem to have some problem with.

This place is just fine the way that it is for me thank you.

Coops.

How is there a Big Brother attitude? There's a whole forum dedicated to people being able to talk, discuss and bitch about whatever they want; you just can't hijack a thread about, say, tire choices, with any rantings and ravings about whatever ax you have to grind at that particular moment. That seems like the perfect balance to me. I've been on ADV Rider, and frankly, I'm glad this isn't a forum where the discussion of something like places to camp on BLM land turns into an anti-government screed that would give Cliven Bundy an erection.

I don't even own a V-Strom any more, but I keep coming here because it's one of the few motorcycle forums that maintains some sort of standards, and yet allows enough leeway for those that want it to howl at the moon as much as they want.

We have the same controversy over at BurgmanUSA as if some people want to divorce the rest of life from their motorcycling. Like there, this is an international forum ( ADVRider even more so ) and I think it's very healthy to get a variety of views on controversial topics and the Trooper Arena works just fine for that.

It's a good idea to be able to opt out of the topics in there and wish I could do that with posts on religion on another rationalism forum I frequent.

The controversial topic forum ie Trooper Arena is a good place to correct misconceptions about other countries and systems like universal healthcare.
Riding in the US is a terror if you don't have extensive healthcare insurance for instance...a casual ride to Pennsylvania and a crash in the twists could bankrupt the unwary Canadian.
Not thinking and trying to bring a gun into Canada could lead to very serious consequences to an unwary American.

But both are controversial topics not directly related to motorcycles but yet a significant factor for some. The arena is a good place to battle the opinions out without interrupting other threads and gives mods a spot to toss threads that stray into controversial areas not related to riding.

Grey Wolf is not fond of the Arena and shows it in the OP ....but he's a good enough mod to realize there are other views of it.
He probably figured this "patch" to keep his own sanity and is inviting others of a similar mind.
