Traction control?

Keep in mind my first 2 bikes had Drum brakes! Most of my bikes since then have been deliberately simple. Now I have a bike with a bunch of stuff I know little about.

ABS I have figured out I guess .. there is nothing to know or use. It just happens

but

What is traction control, what does it do and when do I use it? I evidently have 2 levels of traction control .. how do they differ and under what circumstances would I choose one over the other.

I kind of figured I would spend the rest of my days with the Wee and never use it but ... I am curious.

Traction control senses tire slippage and cuts power from the engine to attempt to counteract that.. 2 is the most sensitive. 1 takes more slippage to activate. Unless you like breaking the rear end free or popping wheelies there is really not much reason to take it out of setting 2. It'll try to help if it senses wheel slippage.. otherwise, you won't even realize that its on.. Kinda like ABS.. It just happens. You're probably gonna hear many different opinions from people that they always turn it off, but if you aren't hooning about and just riding somewhat normally, there is really no reason to do so...

Tenere is the same way. I leave mine in setting 2 (most sensitive) except when I putz around in the dirt or sand. Then I turn it off.

Really good traction control is hardly noticeable. You feel ABS pulsating, but not traction control.

I am convinced traction control has helped me out of a situation with sand on a road in a turn...........I hit it powering out of a fairly tight turn. Bike eased off the power before I could react. Still slipped a bit, but never stepped clear out on me. I don't think I am that good with the throttle.........

Scary thing when you pop into a corner and suddenly realize the surface is all loose sand.
ABS will pulse on a crappy system, F800 and G650GS BMW's.
Real traction control will keep you from spitting gravel out for under the rear wheel when trying to power through.
I kinda thought that the alleged 70 hp on my 04 Wee Strom qualified as traction control. It's hard to get too out of hand.

As above but for normal riding I use mode 1 which is the least intrusive. Mode 2 I think of as a rain mode as it is more aggressive and will kick in much sooner.

Mode 0 basically shuts off traction control.

Why would you not want that all of the time? It doesn't have an ignition mapping element so power delivery is not any different... Even when I'm hauling ass chasing sportbikes, I'd rather TC kick in sooner than later... I don't have any problem keeping up and will usually only see the TC light flickering briefly when I'm really hamfisted coming out of corners.

I recently got my 2014 Vee, and hated seeing the orange light on the dash when TC is not engaged. When riding it home from Reno, I first thought it was a problem, then deduced they just want to warn you, you are on your own. I don't like an orange idiot light on all the time, therefore , have decided to keep in TC1, and will use 2 if riding in slippery, sandy, or wet conditions.

Wow! Thanks guys. I never had it and didn't know what to do with it so I had it off. I live and ride in an area where strong winds often throw gravel and silt on the road and it's never the same places.
I thought you just did a quick clutch tug when the rear wheel started to slip and feed it clutch to get control but this sounds pretty awesome as my response times have slowed a bit.

I thought the traction control would rob me of control but... guess I will put it on "1" and give it a go. I was prettty sure i was going to get a resounding negative opinion and am pleasantly surprised by the reponses.

I'm willing to say that you are correct... (can you hear a but coming?) But there is the occasion when on especially tight sections you end up backing into the corners and need to hold that arc on the way out.

I do leave my TC on level 1 most of the time. Along with chipping in on that unexpected sandy patch, etc _ using TC on imperfect (choppy) roads extends rear tire life.

When it rains I will switch to level 2 and if I'm on a road surface that I'm not familiar with _ I will test the grip available (while going straight) for that night and that road and that tire. That flashing light is actually a "traction meter".
