I dunno if posting to a thread this old is frowned upon or not, but as I work overnight security I have plenty of time to browse the depths of the forums.
My 2 cents for safety tips (for anyone, rider or cager):
Don't punch it as the light goes green, I've seen many cars and big rigs blow through red lights right after I got my green.
Look far enough down the road to see any possible hazards/trouble spots. Think traffic jams, big rig blocking the road to back into his delivery location, vehicles on the side of the road, etc.
Similar to what Roastpuppy said, assume everyone else out there is an idiot/a threat to you. Countless times I've seen people lane change w/o looking first or using a signal. If you spend a lot of time on the roads try studying peoples driving habits/actions, you can actually learn to sense what they might do and can act accordingly.
Also take an afternoon to attend a Defensive Driving Course, preferably one at a "all you can eat buffet". Most insurance companies will give you a discount for taking the course. If not at least you get a refresher on driving safe and food
