Nelson rigg is a good option; they just released a good set of soft bags.

What bags are they? I don't see anything new on their website.

Givi hard bags and top box.

Has anyone ever added small bags to the crash bars?

Pelican 1550 and old Shad top box:

Pelican 1550 are mounted directly to quick disconnect SWM racks. They are symmetrical and that setup is as narrow as it gets. The pelicans are mounted "wrong" at the lid. Much easier to load. I use custom fitting bags for them.

Shad top box.

Everything (except the SWM racks) are e-bay finds years ago. They have a combined ~50k touring miles, no problems on any surface.

Seems no one went with the Suzuki side cases? I am considering them. I have a '17 650 and 80% of the time will not have the bags on the bike ... I like the how the stock mounting is really minimal vs. the large racks. Also, will only ride on road.

Are there issues/problems with the stock system?

There are no issues. They mount very slim and are very solid. I think made by Shad. They are just not very big (the right one is cut out for the exhaust) and most want to do longer distance touring and need more room for all the stuff they are carrying. I sold mine for that reason but the mounts are still on the bike so I could go either way, if I were to do more local riding, which I don't at the moment. They are a bargain because there are more sellers than buyers if you watch here for a while.
