V-Tom heads to Utah, BC and back July 2019

I had training (for the new 2020 Porsche 911) at Salt lake City in July of 2019. Instead of flying out I decided to ride and after that head though Oregon and Washington state, out to BC and ride home across Canada.

I left Sunday, July 7th and got back home Sunday July 21st. riding solo means I am happy doing lots of miles in a day when slabbing as I don't feel any overwhelming urge to check into a hotel early by myself. I left with my Odometr reading 178,354 km / 110,824 miles and got home with it reading 188,862 km / 117353 miles. total mileage 10,508 km / 6,529 miles

Lots of slabbing so nut to many pictures at first.

Here are some of the pictures:

First day. Loaded up ready to go. Home is in Port Perry, Ontario, Canada. About an hour east of Toronto.

Uneventful first day,. although my GPS traffic app told me there was terrible traffic on my route ahead as I worked my way towards Chicago and the GPS rerouted me to save about 4 minutes.

Not much to show this day but I did cross the Mississippi:

1,150 km, about 730 miles. Mainly slabbing. I stayed the night in Davenport, Iowa.

2nd day: Davenport to Cheyenne, Wyoming

This is pretty typical of what you see off I80 in Nebraska, tons of corn:

"The Archway" over I80, Kearney Nebraska:

Some wicked weather showing up in the GPS radar ahead. No practical way to avoid it:

After going through the first squall I headed into the second. I didn't take pictures when in it but it looked much like the video people take when a tornado goes just outside their house:

1,280 km / 790 miles, all slabbing.

3rd day

The night before when gassing a local started talking to me and asking where I was heading. He suggested I take a little side-trip into the Snowy range so I decided to add it to my route.

It was a very worthwhile side trip with lots of nice scenery:

This site is a memorial to the 66 people that died in a plane crash on Medicine Bow Peak on October 6, 1955

It got over 10,300 feet. At a few points temperatures dropped to the 40's although on this shot it is low 50's.

I slabbed a bit on I80 then went down 191 to Flaming Gorge National recreation area.

Very desolate empty countryside:

Tom - just got home to Victoria from Ontario after picking up my new to me Vee - picked it up in Toronto two weeks ago. First adventure sport touring bike I've owned and it performed well. Came across from northern Ontario, Larder lake - about an hour south of Timmins. Couple of cool mornings, but otherwise good. Some 5200 Kms total with 4000 Kms this week. For a poor man's adventure sport touring bike, these VStroms are quite good. Glad you enjoyed the ride, and had a good route. Great pics. Cheers

Awesome way to start your Strom ownership!

I ran out of time to finish the pictures today so will likely continue next week. I continue out to Vancouver, and head home via Sea-to-sky, Duffy's Lake road, Banff and then along Trans Canada. (Unfortunately my camera wasn't working from part of Washington state and until Lilloett. There was room on the SD card but looks like the camera can't handle over 10,000 pictures or something like that. New SD card fixed it.)

Day 4 Started in Evanston Wyoming and ended around 1 or 2 pm at the "Grand American Hotel" in downtown Salt Lake City for the training with Porsche. (Beautiful Hotel, Glad Porsche was paying for it instead of me!)

Low mileage day, only about 160 miles. I think the pictures below were mainly in the "Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest":

When I left that area I went along 189 to 92 and went over another set of mountains. Nice twisties in there and didn't take much for pictures.

This was leaving the area just before entering Salt Lake City:

Temperature when I left Evanston was in 40's iirc. It dropped briefly into the upper 30's at some point and was 100įf when entered Salt Lake City.
