6/10 Day 4 - A head wind and a broken weld.

569 miles of head wind.
Fuel: $50.36; Avg 35.8 mpg (low of 29.9 mpg)

I made good use of the 2 liter water bladder that zips to the back of my Olympia Motoquest 3/4 length coat. On warm days, I fill it completely with ice, then add 8-12 ounces of fluid. This method allows me to drink ice cold liquids until the next gas stop.

After a long day of severe headwinds on the slab with an 80mph speed limit, I stopped in Wall, SD. The Sunshine Inn would be my home for the next two nights. It was a clean, comfortable room with affordable rates, just north of the Badlands.

After backing my bike into the parking spot outside my hotel room, I noticed that the left pannier was lower than the right. After removing the luggage, I found this:

6/11 - Day 5 Find a fix, and get local riding advice

I had zip tied the luggage frame in place, thinking that would hold for the rest of the trip, but after polling some Stromtroopers, I decided to find a welder. I had breakfast at the Red Rock restaurant in Wall, then walked two blocks to the only auto repair place in town. He recommended Knight’s welding in Box Elder, 30 miles west of Wall.

At Knight’s he told me he could take care of me in 15 minutes for $40. While his welder was fixing my frame we engaged in bike talk. He had two Harleys and a Yamaha. He warned me to watch for wildlife and recommended a route along the south and through the Badlands. (See breadcrumb photo.) Seeing the Medflight sticker on my top box, he told me about hitting a deer doing 70 on his Harley. He woke up in the hospital, after a $33,000 helicopter ride. He described months of recovery, and showed me some severe scars on his head.

They did an excellent job rewelding the frame, scuffing and spray painting when they were done. Soon I was heading for the Badlands, with some threat of rain in the air.

6/12 - Day 6 Mt Rushmore, Needles Highway 16A, Ten Sleep

Wall, SD to Buffalo, WY

305 Scenic Miles

There was an overlook in the Badlands, where I got off the bike and just sat in silence with my legs dangling over a cliff. For me, the vast expanses, the vistas, and the unexplainable topography leaves me speechless.

There were numerous occasions over the next several days were days where I wish I could have sat in silence and just soaked in the scenery. I took hundreds of pictures, probably 75 or more are worth looking at on a large screen, but I’ll only post a handful here.

At Rushmore, I asked a ranger about the hall of records. He spent a lot of time, quite defensively explaining that the trail was closed about 10 years ago. I would have loved to visit the hall of records. Gutzon Borglum was not just memorializing the presidents, but the founding documents of our republic.

6/13 - Day 7 Ten Sleep, Wy

Years ago my dad took me pronghorn antelope hunting near Ten Sleep, Wyoming. At that time there was one building, a gas station-general store-post office-restaurant. My how times have changed.

Day 7 Yellowstone East to North

This day was a mix of magnificent beauty, mountain pass riding, and being parked on dirt roads waiting for the one lane to open in my direction. Don’t get me wrong, the washed out roads, covered in dirt with a recent rain made the ride a little more fun.

Route
SteVee at the East Gate
Waterfalls

If I remember correctly I stopped at the Wall place and had a meal a quiet day with few people. Kinda like Pigeon Forge, eminently ignore able?
I went into the North side of the Grand Canyon and the road was dirt from Jacobs lake to the park. No traffic on the Sunday but the work crew were back at it on the next morning, Monday. It took me a while to get around the exiting traffic but clear going after getting to the front. Amazing that folks in cars panic at construction.
Your ride seems epic and great pictures.
I passed on the big heads when I saw what they wanted to park and go into the venue. I also saw the big Indian from a distance too. another Oh, well.
