Lake Superior Trip Question

Question to ask those who have made the Lake Superior Circle Tour.

We do not plan on camping, so will need to stay at motels, B&Bs or cabins. Will this be a problem?

Still waiting on a map from Ride Lake Superior that I thought might help.

I did the circle tour fall of '16.....it was great!!! I camped about 1/2 the time, motels the rest. There are enough of them, but best to plan your stops. Keweenaw Peninsula and north of Duluth to Thunder Bay probably the areas rooms are more scarce. If going mid summer, plan as much as possible. Generally fewer chains/amenities, but very clean and friendly owners. White Fang Motel near Wawa is the only place I stayed on the north shore, camped the other nights.
Great trip coming up for you!!!

I've done the trip twice. Both times were many years ago. No problems with motels and cabins. it's probably better now.

Thanks for the replies. Feel a bit better now. I don't mind the camping, but one guy said no to that. Was not sure if I should tell him to stay home or allow him to ride along ...

Is it his trip or your trip?
That's a big reason I rode it alone.

Other thing, there are some very beautiful campsites right ON the shores. NO hotel going to get you as close as they will.

Ditto that, on of my favorites is the campground in Grand Marais (MI). I've stayed there 3 times now.

As others have said, things are a bit more scarce on the north shore, so if there's any portion where you may want to make reservations in advance, that would be it.

I had no problems finding hotel/motel accommodations, even at the height of the tourist season, in areas around Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Marquette, Munising, etc.

One place on the south side you may want to plan in advance for is Copper Harbor. Well worth the ride to get there, but not a lot of accommodations once you're there. Oh, and something they don't tell you in the travel brochures -- there's no cell phone coverage in Copper Harbor. Several places have wi-fi, but to make a real call with your cell, you have to drive about 6 miles to the top of a nearby mountain to get a signal from the other side of the peninsula. I did see some public phones there...but who knows how to use those anymore?

If it's a good day to wash the bike, it's a better day to ride the bike.

There are a few places to stay in Terrace Bay, ON as well, which is a couple of hours outside of Thunder Bay, and then a few more in Marathon beyond that.

You'll love the ride - it's gorgeous.

Planning ahead for a trip in the summer is crucial along the North Shore (RT. 66) of Lake Superior. State Parks, and Provincial Parks, are often booked up way ahead of time, even during the week.

Best time to go, if you like to camp and prefer less crowds, is either before Memorial Day or After Labor Day. The Minnesota State Park system is top shelf.

Being a MN resident, my wife and I have been to every park and have a plaque to prove it!

Good luck with your trip.
