SW Pennsylvania to SW Florida

My teacher wife and daughters will be off all summer and they're headed to Naples, Florida for a month. I'll be riding down and back to spend a week while they are there. This is my first Vee, just picked her up last week. '03 DL1000 with 23,000 miles. I'm in the process of getting familiar with the bike and setting it up for the trip. The Vee came with the stock and taller aftermarket wind screen and a trunk. I picked up a set of SW-MOTECH Trax cases and installed them the other night. It's been a while since I did any long distance riding on a motorcycle so I'm really looking forward to the trip. Feel free to throw any route ideas, gear tips or any other input my way. Definitely jumping on the Blue Ridge Parkway at some point and avoiding as much interstate as possible.

US 219 and US 220 are both great rides down through Virginia and West Virginia. You could also incorporate a trip to Seneca Rocks In West Virginia on your way down.

Take extra clothing, like a fleece jacket or something. I've been on the Parkway a lot, and sometimes even in June and July it can get cold up there, especially when it's foggy.

Enjoy the ride.

Something to think about, Amtrak has a vehicle train from DC area to Sanford FL.

Whatever you choose to ride, enjoy it and be open to new experiences.

Weasel, the back roads have so much to see. I'd suggest that you join the Tour Of Honor, get your flag, load the memorials, Doughboys, Madonnas, Statues of Liberty and flag murals into your computer/gps and flower-sniff your way down and back seeing these sights and honoring our veterans. Lots of "dots" to connect to make some great routes. Check out 2017 Tour of Honor Motorcycle Ride

How many hours per day do you plan to ride? Once you decide, I suggest you take a weekend and spend that amount of hours in the saddle on back-to-back days. That will help you decide if your ass can take it with the current seat, if your arm/hands can take it, etc. I also suggest you use the taller windshield.

If you're never ridden in Fla, be VERY aware and have your head on a swivel. Naples is God's waiting room...meaning there are a LOT of old people who never got the memo to hang up their keys. Plus, it is brutally hot and humid in the summer down here. I'd MUCH rather be somewhere else this summer, but issues have kept me here until at least August. After that, I hope to head to TN/KY for a month or 3. Next year is Colorado, even if I leave my wife in Fla...I'm going to friggin Colorado for the summer!!!!

Air Hawk. Sheep skin. Sun screen. Trauma kit with label on bag where it is.

Parkway to Cherokee, turn R 441, Left up to Clingman's dome. Climb the tower. Down to Gatlinburg. Left on little river road through the park. 321 to Foothills PKWY, left on 129 Dragon. Robbinsville. Right over Cherohala Skyway. Various routes south.

Avoid 95.

Avoid Interstates through Atlanta.

That's about 1,200 miles, so a 3-4 day trip if one wants to avoid highways the way I travel. I would think about going S/SE across WV toward the BRP around the NC/VA border. Take the BRP to SW of Asheville - I like Rt 215S to Rt 178S. Keep heading SE in the general direction of Jacksonville, FL through GA. Go through Ocala NF and the lake region of central FL generally heading SW. I recommend taking 31S out of Arcadia since there are no towns to trudge through, and take I75S for the last stretch from Ft Myers to Naples. It will be hot down there, a mesh jacket would be nice. You can use a rain jacket as a wind braker over the mesh in cool areas like the BRP....and layering if needed. Safe travels.
