CNY to Manitoulin/Huron Wilderness
First post for me of journeys with my son on our pair of 2014 V-strom 650s. This trip was actually our 3rd journey (taken in Mid August this past summer)and we had finally broken down and gotten some good Kappa 40 liter side cases, so in a way we felt like we had 'arrived'. Anyway the trip included skirting the Lake Ontario shoreline from Sodus Bay, NY to Olcott, NY and crossing the border near Lewiston, NY. Border crossing was followed by a rather hair raising stint on the QE 2 which included realizing that the Garmin had no Canadian Map! Oh well- we fabricated a different bracket for the trusty Smart phone and continued on out of the Toronto madness and on up into the broader reaches of Canada eventually stopping for a fantastic Whitefish lunch. We navigated out onto the Island of Manitoulin near dark and absorbed the primal beauty of this place while camping for the night. The next day we explored what is surely some of the most rugged Great Lakes Coastline imaginable, doing some fishing with our pack rods. The next day we took the Ferry back across to the Canadian Mainland and set course down the side of Lake Huron, traveling through first cattle country and then into parts of the Canadian grain belt. Bikes performed this series of 400+ mile days with the confidence I am happy to say I had when we bought them last December. They bikes are splendid traveling companions that have borne us down through DC, the Blue Ridge, the Dragon and beyond and other journeys up into the Adirondacks across Lake Champlain and over to Whiteface and down to Lake Placid. All of our trips have been camping trips and we are really looking forward to heading to Maine, Nova Scotia and out across to Newfoundland on long legged run next summer.
