3 Stroms Attempt the CDT

I started a brief thread in General discussion but this belongs here.
5 of us started out with the goal of completing the CDT. only 3 actually completed the trail as detailed in GPS Kevins site. I ended up finishing on asphalt and one guy got sick.
My bike was trailered by a good friend from NY to El Paso along with his Wee and a Vee (3 stroms on one trailer)

Day 1: Met up with a couple more friends from South Carolina and the trip began.
It was crazy hot (106 Deg F) and we got a little turned around a couple times getting out of El Paso. We decide to skip the 42 miles of asphalt south and back again to Hatchita (84 miles total). We did hit the Mexican border but just not in Antelope Wells.

The first "Red" section was gated and locked so that was not an option.
The thankfully brief section on Rt 10 was horrible, it was ridiculously hot and tractor trailers were everywhere. fortunately this did not last too long and we ended up in what I thought was someones yard but it was the trail.
This day proved too much for me, I was over my head, trying to go too fast for my abilities and I "target fixated" crashing just after this photo was taken. In the end I did end up fracturing something in my heel but that wasn't found out until I returned to CT.

Day 2: Silver City NM to Grants NM - 267miles

As a little recap... there were 5 of us, 2 Wee Stroms a 2014 Vee, a KTM 950 super enduro and a GS F800.
The day started off beautifully, the Gila National Forest was beautiful. Here I met the 1st real washboard and I thought there something wrong with my bike but it was just the road. Miles of washboard which I eventually got used to it.
This is where my 2nd "dirt nap" happened. I came around a corner to face the grill of a jeep coming the other way. What happened was... I stabbed the front brake and down I went, the next thing I know the guy behind me ran me over (he couldn't stop in time) and his bike landed on top of me. The whole thing was captured on my GoPro. They got the bike off me quickly but it felt like an eternity.
I dusted myself off and continued on my way. We took the green route to Datil to get fuel (picture) and on to Pie Town, we did not stop for pie, it was so hot that pie did not seem all that interesting.
I was hurting and my bike front end was twisted so I took the Green route up to Grants.
Two broken mirrors and a broken clutch lever.

This is what my right leg looked like after day 2 .....
And a nice shot a typical NM dirt road, there is a member of the group (just a speck) up the road a spell.

Needless to say I rode in the support truck on day 3 and day 4.

It was a learning experience, my 1st "adventure" trip and I have only had my MC license for 3 years so it's all a learning experience.

Day 3: The group rode from Grants to Abiquiu for 240 miles while I rode in the truck with Bud and iced my wounds. It wasn't a total loss because we stopped at a small shop that had some dirt bikes and weed whackers, leaf blowers ect and found a reasonable pair of mirrors ($40) and a spare clutch lever ($4) that was pretty worn out but would work in a pinch.
Also I got to know Bud who is a very interesting and fun character so that was fun too.
Albuquerque is a really nice looking city, I wish I got some pictures of the flyover highways, stunningly beautiful and nice iron work on the bridges, really nice. People were so friendly too.

There are not many hotels in Abiquiu so we ended up staying in Espanola.
I guess I wasn't in the picture taking mood this day.

What's the "CDT"?

..Tom

My Opinion:
Vee or V= DL1000 before 2014
Vee2 or V2 = DL1000 2015 to 2019
Vee3 or V3 = DL1050 2020 to?

My Stroms:
2006 DL650: 202,000 km 125,500 miles, Sold
2012 DL650 139,500+ km, 86,700+ miles. Sold
2015 DL1000 New July 2015 205,000+ km, 127,000+ miles.

This can help preventing from cars pulling out in front of you (SMIDSY)

That was my first question, lol!
I think it means the Continental Divide trail. But there's a hiking only trail (I think) so this one must be different.
Found this link on the internet;

https://sites.google.com/site/gpskev...al-divide-ride

Looks like it might be geared more towards Dual sports bikes than adventure bikes. (ie; DR650, etc)

It's the "Continental Divide Trail" that runs from the US/ Mexico border up into Canada.
Total length is 3,200 miles and crosses New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and up to Banff.
This trail was originally set up for bicycles and hikers and some sections do not allow motorized travel so people have gotten a little creative with the routes.
The route selected came from GPX files made by GPS Kevin and this one was about 85% dirt roads with some technical sections thrown in.

Day 4:
The group had a mileage wise, short day of only 220 miles headed up to Del Norte Colorado.
I was still licking my wounds and spend day 2 in the support truck. Today we had a plan to visit Los Alamos and it was fascinating.
Los Alamos is the town that the government created to develop the nuclear bomb and there is a museum that I could have spent all day at.
The pictures are the group getting ready to depart from Espanola, Ken on his way and the Bradbury Museum
